8th January 2012 Cloudy dark brown beer, good pale tan head. Smooth and slightly soft palate with mild fine carbonation. Intense malt with a lot of lactose. Bourbon and sweet coconut. Aniseed alcohol. Semi dry finish. Nothing subtle about this big ol’ BA Barleywine. Good though!
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 kramer (3876) - Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA - SEP 18, 2012
Bottle. Pours a clear chestnut brown body with a small covering of beige head that faded to a thin ring. The nose is rich and intensely malty with some very light sherry-like oxidation notes. Just the right amount of oxidation, and the right kind. Some light vinous notes and wood with a little bit of alcohol. The flavor is rich and thick with the perfect blend of malt and vinous barrel character. It does have a bit of a coconut flavor on the finish. Very light tannic bite on the finish as well with a bit of alcohol, but not boozy at all. Mouthfeel is great as well, not clingy or sticky at all, just the slightest bit of chewy texture and perfect minimal carbonation. This is really good, not sure if the age has anything to do with it or not, but if you have one of these, drink up, cause it isn’t going to get much better.

Sample courtesy of motortoddhead. Deep red-brown pour with plenty of yellow head. Deep dark fruit, almost tangy, toasted malt, caramel, some wood. Flavor better as it warms with slight acidic dark fruit, toasted malt, caramel, brown sugar - all fairly well-blended. Finishes with a decent hop bitterness to match the sweet malt characteristics. Moderate to heavy on the palate.

Pour out of bottle is dark reddish brown with thin to no white head, aroma has notes of port and wine notes, hints of dark fruit, caramel, some slight wine and oak notes as well. Thanks to Aaron for the pour! Taste has notes of wine and port notes, with big sweet cherry and dark fruit notes, hints of vanilla, finish with a hint of booze but not bad. Nice brew!

Courtesy of beer rating maven hopdog, thanks Steve! Pours clear amber with thin tan head. The aroma is yummy with brown sugar, dates, prunes and some mild caramel notes followed by booze. The taste is similar with brown sugar coated prunes, raisins and cherries along with some rich malt sweetened pine hops off in the background. Yummy smooth stuff where all the age on it has done nothing adverse to the experience.
3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 LIVEFAST (62) - Mount Misery, Valley Forge, - NOV 30, 2011
Ogre-sized bottle poured into Tired Hands stemware. Ruby/chestnut, light tan head. Nose is faint, consisting of mostly sweet caramel malts. Sweet caramel emerges for just a second before the tannic red wine takes over. A bit of acetone in the finish. Full bodied with spot on carb. Overal, quite dry and barrel dominent...the bottles I opened last year were much more balanced. Fresh batch please!

Black Friday tasting. Quite an interesting brew. All of the normal flavors in a BW you would expect then the mix of the pinot barrels and hops...quite unique and good.

Pours a dark brown to slight red. But with little headbut good mouth feel. Nose is malty but slight vanilla. First sip is malty goofiness with dry wine like feel. Complex flavors of oak, vanilla brown sugar. Finish is clean. Very good stuff.
