COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Dock Street Barley Wine has been lovingly hand bottled straight from the barrels and bottle-conditioned by our brewers. The carbonation was left intentionally low so you can taste how it did pulled right from the cask. Dock Street Barleywine Style Ale is brewed with the best of both American and English traditions in mind. We stuff so much malt into our mash-tun, it can’t possibly hold any more. It’s hopped in the kettle with copious amounts of Brewer’s Gold and English East Kent Golding hops, to a bracing 76 IBU’s. Its massive maltiness and tremendous bitterness are partnered with the burn from its 10.5% ABV. All of these intense individual characteristics are married through extended aging at cellar temperatures. This very special batch of our immense ale has been tempered by 10 months of quiet aging in oak barrels that had previously been the home of Chadds Ford Pinot Noir wine. The result is a sensual synthesis of the worlds of beer, oak and wine. The aromatics leave the drinkers to believe that they are about to taste a port wine or brandy. The malt is the true star here, with the bitterness of the hops dying away to reveal flavors of coconut, caramel and rum. It all comes together with a slightly acidic and tannic woody finish. The initial hint of alcohol slowly fades into a warming burn.

Sample courtesy of motortoddhead. Deep red-brown pour with plenty of yellow head. Deep dark fruit, almost tangy, toasted malt, caramel, some wood. Flavor better as it warms with slight acidic dark fruit, toasted malt, caramel, brown sugar - all fairly well-blended. Finishes with a decent hop bitterness to match the sweet malt characteristics. Moderate to heavy on the palate.

Pour out of bottle is dark reddish brown with thin to no white head, aroma has notes of port and wine notes, hints of dark fruit, caramel, some slight wine and oak notes as well. Thanks to Aaron for the pour! Taste has notes of wine and port notes, with big sweet cherry and dark fruit notes, hints of vanilla, finish with a hint of booze but not bad. Nice brew!

Courtesy of beer rating maven hopdog, thanks Steve! Pours clear amber with thin tan head. The aroma is yummy with brown sugar, dates, prunes and some mild caramel notes followed by booze. The taste is similar with brown sugar coated prunes, raisins and cherries along with some rich malt sweetened pine hops off in the background. Yummy smooth stuff where all the age on it has done nothing adverse to the experience.

Ogre-sized bottle poured into Tired Hands stemware. Ruby/chestnut, light tan head. Nose is faint, consisting of mostly sweet caramel malts. Sweet caramel emerges for just a second before the tannic red wine takes over. A bit of acetone in the finish. Full bodied with spot on carb. Overal, quite dry and barrel dominent...the bottles I opened last year were much more balanced. Fresh batch please!

Black Friday tasting. Quite an interesting brew. All of the normal flavors in a BW you would expect then the mix of the pinot barrels and hops...quite unique and good.
