2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 joeyplush (586) - Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania, USA - AUG 8, 2010
UPDATED: AUG 29, 2010 On tap at Sansom Street Oyster House. Did not enjoy this one very much. It’s hard to find a beer that is too bitter for me, but this one fit the bill. Don’t mind the hops, but the beer had no balance at all and finished extremely dry. If you like extremely bitter beers (like my English friend Ian does) then this one might be for you.

Melted cqramel in color with a white head. Aroma of grapefruit, spicy rye, light pine and some malt. Has a pretty hearty bite due to the hops and tasty rye. Grapefruit, light earth and pine and malts. Drying finish. Fantastic beer.

Draught at a Jet Rock Bar, PHL Airport. Well this certainly woke me up after a transatlantic flight - it was a bit like being hit over the head with a sock full of hops; gold with a thin white head and a light pine aroma; a thick oily texture, with orange citrus and pine resin flavours; and a good hoppy kick to finish.

Dock Street was giving out free samples at Iron Abbey in Horsham for Beer Week. Poured a dark amber with a white head that lingered. Caramel in the nose, bitter hops and rye in the taste. The best I’ve had in a little while.

11th October 2008. GABF. Hazy brown beer. Dry and crisp palate. Typical rye aromatics. Very dry finish.

Had this on tap tonight at Farmacia in Old City.
Pours a deep dark amber/chestnut brown color that is completely opaque with slight golden amber edges when held to a light source and a two finger frothy off-white head with excellent retention. The head on this beer barely settled throughout the whole pint and it coated the glass with sheets of soapy lacing. Very impressive looking.
Slightly earthy hop aroma with lots of floral and citrus notes balanced by a sweet caramel malt presence and a strong rye character. Hints of lemon peel and grapefruit and subtle earthy pine along with a prominent sweet malt character in the nose.
Slightly chewy medium body that is on the fuller end of the spectrum. Pretty hop forward with a decent amount of dry earthy piny hops, subtle citrus peel presence, sweet caramel malt and prominent rye flavor. This beer is excellently balanced and although the malt backbone and rye are prominent they don’t overpower the hops, allowing the sweet citrus and dry pine notes to shine through. The sweetness from the caramel malt and rye actually enhance these flavors and the balance makes this beer very quaffable. was pleasantly surprised by this one. Highly recommended if fresh.

On cask at Friday the Firkenteenth at the Grey Lodge Pub. Translucent amber, orange with a lacing white head. Citrus aroma, pine, slightly vegetal. Flavor is strong with lemons, grapefruits. Bitter finish. Not enough sweetness to go with all the hops.

pours a nice reddish brown color that is slightly hazy...thin head (maybe since its from yesterdays brew fest and pressure is low in the keg). slightly sweet aroma has some caramel and spicy hops...also a touch of citrus. flavor has definite caramel malt flavor with a very spicy dry hoppiness. rye is noticeable in the dry finish. mouthfeel is a tad watery and the finish is lingering and spicy. overall pretty good...id try it again as it might be better if it wasnt from a day old keg.

Sampled at GABF. Through the haze, i remember this one pretty well. Nice hop aroma with the spicy rye twist. Flavor is hoppy, spicey, well balanced. I’d love to have a few of these.
