Had this a while back on tap at the Albion, Newcastle, Australia. Intense, lively bitterness in this one from memory, really nicely balanced. The way a black IPA should be hopped.

Looks.. Black cola brown, med- large head.
Smells..cacao nibs, choc, a little malty, belgian quad kinda candy, a little wheat and a little less hop.
Tastes..the front is great with a decent hop tropical and piney hops that then gets lost amongst bits of coffee/choc/cacao. Still some resinous bitterness left in this.. Pretty good apart from the cacao is a bit too present for me.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
(Bottle) Fantastic looking beer - black with ruby hints and big dense tan head. Pleasant complex aroma, mainly pine hoppiness but with some earthy, cheese and coffee hints. Medium body with plentiful soft carbonation. The tastes starts with some nice gentle sweetness - berries, candy. There’s dark chocolate notes in the mid-palate which steadily develops a complex bitterness which is hop and dark coffee / burnt bitter. Doesn’t quite work for me, the bitterness is too aggressive and dark.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
500ml bottle (BBE 12/15). Dark brown pour with ruby red hue and a medium sized beige head. Toasty caramel malts dominate the nose with notes of red berries, brown sugar, and subtle yeasty earthy notes. Palate is medium bodied and slick with moderately sweet flavours and a light spicy dryish bitter finish with perhaps the barest hint of coffee. Very drinkable and yet quite complex. A winner.

Pours black with a large off white head.
Nose shows figs, chocolate, sultanas as well as piny and resinous hops.
Mixture of black ipa and old ale in terms of flavours. Soft roast and piny hops but also some figs and port-like notes.

From a bottle. Pours very dark brown with a tiny tan head, mild coffee aroma, just the right amount of fruit hop flavours with a mild hint of chocolate. Great stuff

Bottle (YAY!). Pours cola black with a thin off white head. Nose is passionfruit, orange marmalade, a hint of cola, a little coffee. Flavor is very coffee and roast dominant. I get a little charcoal and some orange marmalade on the mid palate, a Belgian spice note as well, orange peel on the finish, along with more coffee, more burnt toast. Medium bodied, not overbearing, appropriate carbonation. So great to see Doctor’s Orders in bottles, and this is really lovely. Complex, balanced, tasty. Very good.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
With its black body and frothy head, this looks like a great BIPA, but it’s downhill from there. The aromas of bread, sweet biscuits, orange peel and lemon prove a somewhat strange combination and in the mouth the citrus overpowers the malt completely so that there’s this odd mixture of grapefruit and boiled lollies. The palate is watery and the length short. Probably the worst BIPA I’ve ever had.

Tap at Bob’s Bar. Looks the goods. The nose has heaps of candied sugar, brown sugar, molasses and bright orange. The taste is very citric but is overall dominated by the belgian yeast and candied feel. Loads of dark fruit come out. I feel like it may have needed to be toned up a notch to get past that intense belgian focus, but maybe that’s just me.
