Prescription 12 is the 12th commercial offering from Doctorís Orders. It sees our Black IPA (Mind Warp) in a Belgian guise (Belgian yeast and Belgian Candi Syrups). This gives Prescription 12 additional complexity in aromatics, body and flavour. The malty, biscuit, toasty flavours are backed with hints of dark fruits before the lingering addictive bitterness finishes off the mouth-feel.

Had this a while back on tap at the Albion, Newcastle, Australia. Intense, lively bitterness in this one from memory, really nicely balanced. The way a black IPA should be hopped.

Bottle (YAY!). Pours cola black with a thin off white head. Nose is passionfruit, orange marmalade, a hint of cola, a little coffee. Flavor is very coffee and roast dominant. I get a little charcoal and some orange marmalade on the mid palate, a Belgian spice note as well, orange peel on the finish, along with more coffee, more burnt toast. Medium bodied, not overbearing, appropriate carbonation. So great to see Doctorís Orders in bottles, and this is really lovely. Complex, balanced, tasty. Very good.

With its black body and frothy head, this looks like a great BIPA, but itís downhill from there. The aromas of bread, sweet biscuits, orange peel and lemon prove a somewhat strange combination and in the mouth the citrus overpowers the malt completely so that thereís this odd mixture of grapefruit and boiled lollies. The palate is watery and the length short. Probably the worst BIPA Iíve ever had.

Tap at Bobís Bar. Looks the goods. The nose has heaps of candied sugar, brown sugar, molasses and bright orange. The taste is very citric but is overall dominated by the belgian yeast and candied feel. Loads of dark fruit come out. I feel like it may have needed to be toned up a notch to get past that intense belgian focus, but maybe thatís just me.

(Ontap at Beer Deluxe Hawthorn) - 14-Jan-13 - Sweet toffee choc malt and a touch of smoke roast malt. Black colour and light brown head. Sweet tropical fruit, pine hop and spice flavour. Warming hop sweet fruit malt finish and medicinal aftertaste. Not the right balance of flavours too call it a belgian style for me.

On tap at The Scratch. Sinfully black in colour with some good lacing left on the glass. Hopped up aroma with some fruitiness mixed in there as well. The flavour and body is strong.

Beautiful tan head, deep dark drown colour. Mild nose with hoppy, sweet and toffee notes. Taste is fruity hops, nice piney bitterness, I also get treacle, and dark apple. Palate leaves you with a warming bitterness lingering. Good beer.

Growler, 11C. Dark brown with a large beige head. Aroma of chocolate, bananas, lemon, oranges, spices. First sniff is all sweet and fruity, then citrus hops really blast through. Silky mouthfeel. Alcohol is dangerously well-hidden. Sweet chocolate, caramel, banana, some light tropical fruits swept aside by bitter orange and lemon. Fine finish is hoppy, dry and a little salty, but disjointed with what came before. Interesting and fun though.
