Too extreme to be called beer? Brewed to a colossal 45°P, boiled for a full 2 hours while being continually hopped with high alpha American hops, dry-hopped every day in the fermenter for a month, and aged for a month on whole leaf hops, 120 Minute IPA is by far the strongest IPA ever brewed. And at 21% ABV and 120 IBU’s, you can see why we are calling this the Holy Grail for Hopheads. Editors note: ABV reduced down to 18% in 2009.

’06 vintage Rich copper w/ a slight murk. Surprising 1/4" head. Smells of fuel. Taste is sweet malts w/ a syrupy numbing palate. I feel the hops in my jaw, but the malts are heavy here. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ vintage Same amber w/ slight haze. Healthy head here too, for two + years. Similar diesel but w/ more citrus. Still a malty mutha’.... &, too me, lacks complexities compared to... say the 90. This back-to-back vintage tasting was done following a 60 then 90 minute,12 full oz.s off each, (not bragging; just saying) but I still need to TRY THIS FRESH. So far, bo super IPA’s... just American Strong’s.

UPDATED: MAY 24, 2015 Version 2014, dégustée après 1 an. Robe jaune-orangée légèrement trouble. Aucune mousse visible.

The beer pours an opaque orange color with a medium off-white head that fades somewhat quickly. The aroma blends biscuity malts, pine needles, tree sap, cedar wood, resinous hops, and earthiness. Surprisingly, I don’t smell the alcohol, which is weird given the ABV. The taste, oh goodness, the taste; it is mildly umami, mildly bitter, and a touch sour. The predominant flavor is the way cedar and pine needles smell, but there is also a nice underlying fusion of booze, lemongrass, caramel malts, and sap. The palate fuses a slightly sticky texture, medium-full body, and a soft carbonation.

While I like a double IPA every once in a while the overwhelming alcohol gets to me. This was a delight to get this on tap. A 5 ounce pour was all I needed. The hops was not so bitter and a bit of floral, not real citrus to speak of.

355ml bottle from Whole Foods - Tribeca, New York. Bottled 01/14/15. Thanks Jesse!

Deep amber colour with a big white thick head. Strong and bitter, some caramel, overdone fruits. Alcohol is well noticed but mostly as warming way, barley wine feeling. Now I have found ipa that can be called slow sipper.

Bottle thanks to bytemesis! Cheers Mike! Dark orange color with thin persistent white head. Medium thick body. Taste is high bitter and medium to high sweet. Aroma is caramel, hops, piney, pinneapple, chocolate, spicy, pepperish.

12 oz bottle, poured into a snifter. Appearance was a dark honey color with no carbonation. Aroma was honey, hops and alcohol, what a combo. Taste was of course combination of lots of hops and lots of malt. Palate was very mouth coating. Overall, this is a powerhouse beer but the ratings show that. I was blown away with how how boozy it was, but not "too" boozy. One bottle of this was all i could drink, took it slowly and enjoyed it.

Bottle I've been saving since 2013. Cloudy cooper brown with one finger tan head. Aroma is like a barley wine, malty boozy and a hint grassy. When I took the cap off I got a hint of champaign aroma. Up front the hop bitterness comes through, slightly piney and earthy. Feels like 10-12% rather than the 18% it is. Finish is earthy hop and dry barleywine caramel malt character. Dig a hole in the yard and burry a few bottles, dig them up In a few years. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bold spicy citrus pine aroma. Deep golden color with a white head. Books aggressive flavor that i really appeeciate. Just can’t drink it often. Works well paired with food. Bitter and fruity with a nice balance of malt. Just a solid drink that compliments food very nicely.

I think this beer was a little too strong and bitter compared to the 60 or 90 minute IPAs (my favorite being the 90-minute). A little over the top, as I’d rather have a barleywine that’s 12-13% vs. a super-hoppy IPA on steroids. The flavor is there for sure, and it seemed to go down smoother after the first few sips. This was the first and only beer over 14% I have tried so didn’t know what to expect. I give it a decent rating because it is a good beer ($7 for 12 oz. it certainly better be). Just not sure if I would get it again as there are so many out there now.
