BeerGuyTWMore (48), USA Jul 13, 2009 wow! Pours a copper-gold with off white head laces nicely. Aromas of sweet malt, dark fruits some caramelly molasses, citrus hop - orange, and noticeable alcohol. Creamy-medium body malts upfront and then bite into the hops (citrus, pine) which tingles the top of your mouth while your tongue takes in the sugary malt, dark fruit molasses. "Brandied fruitcake" is pretty dead on - 294 calories of deliciousness! Sweet raisin contrasts the piney bitterness and alcohol to round off the finish(last a good while). You have to expect a 9ABV to be sweet...all around just fantastic! mrhoppy (208), Santa Clara, California, USA Jul 11, 2009 I didn’t care for this. It’s hopped over and over and over. It just tasted like I was chewing on a hop cone as using it like snuff and drinking the juice. beerfest5 (128), Simsbury, Connecticut, USA Jul 10, 2009 did not really live up to the hype, maybe a bad batch but i really didnt like this one too much. Dogfish Head is sort of hit or miss for me, i guess this was a miss. FlyingTaco (112), Massachusetts, USA Jul 9, 2009 Original review date 10/30/2008...12-oz into Cab glass. I haven’t had this for a few years, so let’s see if I can trust my palate memory...
Crystal-clear copper color with sparse carbonation. Head is thin and dissipates quickly, leaving yeasty bubbles.
Extra-grassy and earthy hops, but there is that DFH tell that I remember profusely...quite a bit of earth. There’s actually a little cowpie stench in there, too. Copious amber/caramel malt.
Even thought there’s clamminess and the cowpie stench shows up in the back of the palate, there is a nice malty taste to this with slightly alcoholic sweetness. Still...that extra-earthy tone detracts from this quite a bit and grassys up the hop bitterness a great deal. Good, but not as impressive as one would expect.
Palate feel is OK once the earth is traversed. It’s mostly amber maltiness, with some austere grassy hops and maybe some pinyness. Still, that signature DFH earthy aftertaste will bite down on it hard.
Now I remember why I haven’t picked this one up recently. Decently-crafted but maybe it’s the water that provides that ultra-earthiness. Not for me.
drinkininATL (6), Atlanta, Georgia, USA does not count Jul 8, 2009 Bottle from nearby liquor store. Very balanced, very tasty, this is a big time beer.
Kind of like a rich and fulfilling entree or dessert, the calorie intake says it all. Great taste, though not the kind of beer you would pound playing beach volleyball. I will specifically hunt this out when beer shopping. jrallen34 (123), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 7, 2009 Drank from a bottle into a chalice.
This beer pours a amber almost orange, with a nice white head that pops up, stays a while not forever. Nice lacing for an IPA.
It smells very hoppy with a hint of citrus.
This taste is hoppy with a fruit, with a lite of bitterness at the end. This is a very good beer. joshpiledean (224), Ames, Iowa, USA Jul 7, 2009 Pour: Amber/copper, fairly large head. Aroma: Balance of citrus hops, caramel and syrup sweetness, bready malt. Flavor: Suprisingly balanced for an imperial IPA, hops provide mostly bitterness and aftertaste, some citrus. Sweet malts, almost tastes like a dessert, with a good beery bitterness behind it. Finish is hoppy, bitter. MrRoss (614), Delta, British Columbia, Canada Jul 7, 2009 Updated: Jul 8, 2009From Full Throttle Bottles in Seattle, WA. Starting with an inviting colour of clear, rich copper - almost orange it was, underneath a frothy white two-fingered head. An appealing aroma of hop and malt blend pleased the nose, and shit howdy, did this ever taste good! Nice bite from the hops followed with a slightly sweet finish from the malt. Why can’t all, or at least most beers taste as good as this? Now to kick myself for only buying one.
