leems (147), Portland, Oregon, USA May 6, 2009 12oz bottle poured into a snifter, an orangey amber color with a small off white head. Aroma is of dried fruit (apricot) with a lot of malt sweetness and a tiny amount of citrusy hops. The flavor is not as sweet as the nose would make one think, a little alcohol peaks through and then florally hop. This is not the style of IIPA that I enjoy, the flavor is too caramel and dried fruit, the malt is not balanced by the hops enough. I see what Dogfish Head was attempting to do though and I think they did it well, just not my cup of tea. AtlAggie (131), Atlanta, Georgia, USA May 5, 2009 Pours deep golden yellow with a generous, lovely head. Nose is all floral hops, hints of grapefruit and other sweeter fruits. Flavor is well-balanced for something this hoppy, less bitter than others in the style. Big hop flavor balanced against the malts and fruits to make it an enjoyable IPA, at least for someone like me who is not a huge fan of the style. Lingering bitterness on the finish has roasted coffee notes--or maybe that’s just me. ScottyP (314), Brentwood, Tennessee, USA May 3, 2009 Pours a clear orangey/gold color with off white head. Aroma of hops obviously, but caramel malt and slight citrus really makes it enjoyable. Caramel malts and spice up front makes way to the hop explosion in the finish. Very sticky, but I’m really digging this one. Another winner from Dogfish Head. nbutler11 (729), Phoenix, Arizona, USA May 2, 2009 On tap at Papago. Pours a shiny amber color with a trim off-white head. Smells of pine, caramel, and grapefruit. Tastes of each with an added helping of salt - particularly at the back of the palate. Malty for its apearance. Dense and balanced. A fine DIPA. pintbypint (1002), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada May 1, 2009 12 fl oz brown bottle. Orange/deep gold colour. Large white head, sticky lace. Strong west coast grapefruit resiny hop scent, light alcohol. Flavour is floral and citrusy - notes of orange and grapefruit, honeyish sweetness. Finishes with a nice grapefruity/leafy hop dose that lingers, also some sharp alcohol. Medium body, carbonation is mild. Maltier than I was expecting, very drinkable. captaincass (45), Everson, Washington, USA May 1, 2009 smells floral and hoppy, poured it and i knew what i was in for. tastes like raisins, is complex but not what i was looking for, just not enough hops to balance out the rotten raisin flavor. i could see how people would be crazy for this, its just way too sweet and needs more hops not balanced at all, ata least for me. it seems to be more of a barleywine and at that is a very good ale, but when i get a double ipa i am looking for hops and this ale just gives me raisins and booze. if this was a barleywine i would give it a higher mark. it is very complex which i’ll give folks credit for but is just a barleywine. phish1997 (3), Illinois, USA does not count May 1, 2009 Great beer! Good balance of hops and malt, Notes of citrus are my favorite of any DIPA. Scauca (408), Lovere, Italy May 1, 2009 Hazy amber with a fast disappearing white head. Strong hoppy aroma, grassy and fruity, boozy, caramel. Full bodied, sweet but quite hard to swallow. More balanced than other hop bombs has a nice not that bitter end.
