BVery (445), Burnsville, Minnesota, USA Mar 17, 2009 BOTTLE: clear copper pour, aroma of pine hops and fruit. Taste is raisin, citrus, hop, and a nice malt backing. I like the 60 minute better, but this is good. JaBier (1130), Capital City, Ohio, USA Mar 17, 2009 12oz bottle at Gallo’s. Copper/amber pour with a medium off-white head. Bitter citrus hop aroma with a bready malt balance. Citrusy hop aroma up front, followed by malty sweetness and the bitterness returns for the finish. Good stuff. ben4321 (948), Rockville, Maryland, USA Mar 16, 2009 Updated: Jul 24, 2009Location: I wanted to update this rating, so I picked up a 12 oz bottle from Gilly’s, and I’m rating updating on 7/24/09
Aroma: Really nice grapefruit and pine aroma, light caramel malt in there too
Appearance: Clear amber looking color, about 1 inch of off-white head, nice lacing
Flavor: Somehow this has a nice balance, while still having a huge hoppiness to it. Tastes as good as I had remembered.
Palate: Great mouthfeel, medium to full body, long lasting palate
Overall Impression:
These guys know how to make an IPA, and this one is great. One of the better IPAs out there. This is one tasty beer, and I’m glad I’m updating it, but not changing the rating, because it’s really quite good.
mysteriumus (4), California, USA does not count Mar 12, 2009 Bottle. Pours a deep orange-brown with moderate tan head, leaving a pleasant lace. I recall this bottle seeming over-carbonated when it was cold, but this sensation vanished after about ten minutes of idling. Whatever . . . this stuff is awesome. Sweet malts, raisins, and citrus upon entering the palate, with its piny hop notes shining through down the throat. A bit more substantial of a mouthfeel than some IPAs, because of the remarkable balance. This beer is incredible; it’s definitely the best IPA I’ve ever had. aaronbr (49), Palo Alto, California, USA Mar 11, 2009 Poured from 12-oz bottle. Looks great - clean copper pour with very thin head. Taste has a bit too much raisin or fruitiness for my liking, though the hoppiness is definitely right there. viet959 (68), , Georgia, USA Mar 10, 2009 Updated: Mar 20, 2009Testing including Ruination, Double Simcoe, and DF 90min. Poured from 12oz bottle. Nice copper, orange color w/ light tan head. The Aroma is of Hops, Citrus, Dried Fruit and Pine and oddly enough a light black coffee smell... Taste is very nice bitter, floral, bready, pine hops, and sweet malts. It has a nice long finish that is sweet, bitter, refreshing and very satisfying. Out of the 3, this is has my 2nd place vote. It was just a little to sweet. RHeastings (377), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 10, 2009 Enjoyed via both draft and 12oz bottle. Pours light copper. Aroma is of citrusy American hops (Cascade/Centennial?). Flavor is thoroughly hop-centric, as one would imagine. However, a dry finish and some background malt sweetness make this extremely drinkable. Overall, one of the best, if not the best, imperial IPAs brewed on the east coast of the U.S. beerchugger (285), Colorado, USA Mar 5, 2009 Updated: Apr 21, 2009I know I’m supposed to love this beer, it’s a god of IPA’s. However, I don’t, and I enjoy IPA’s. The aroma had faint floral notes, but nothing impressive. The flavor seemed to be pointlessly bitter. There is very little hop character to this beer, other than just being bitter. It’s not that I don’t like IPAs, I do. But this beer seemed to lack depth in it’s supposed hop glorification. I will revisit this beer down the road and do a rerate, but at this point, their 60 minute is much better.
