jahmokie (14), Chicago, Illinois, USA Oct 5, 2009 a great dipa from one of the best stateside brewers. lots of malt in this one (which is not a bad thing in a DIPA) and caramel/molasses notes. tedovertu (259), Apple Valley, Minnesota, USA Oct 5, 2009 An amazing IPA. Not as much hops as I expected. Very smooth and balance for an IPA. Dark caramel mixed with dark fruits, what could be better. Grapefruit with some pine bitterness mixed in with sweetness. Wulfstan (509), California, USA Oct 5, 2009 This is an outstanding, double IPA with a rich, well-rounded character similar to a hoppy, lighter barleywine
It’s amber with a large pale tan head that shrinks slowly to a lasting foamy top. It leaves a little weak lace.
The aroma is rich with caramelised fruit, bread crust, raisin, hints of grapefruit, orange, hay, dry leaves, and candy.
The taste is interesting, with firm sweetness, bitterness, and spiceiness, all coordinated and balanced nicely. It tastes of dry bread crust and prunes with hints of grapefruit, leaves, caramel, candied fruit, spicey raisins, candy, alcoholic spice and warmth. The sweetness is thick at first but this soon is joined by rich hop character and tingly bitterness on the sides of the tounge. Rich and engaging, it’s well-integrated and very drinkable.
Gary (352), Buckinghamshire, England Oct 4, 2009 Updated: Oct 17, 2009Great shit. I guess these guys invented the style in the mid 90’s and what a seminar on ’Hop Bombs’ in a bottle. Very soothing ., I’m gettiing a head spin. Nice grassy ,chewy hoppiness ..pretty waxy and inprinting on my gumbs . Syrupy/Malt caramel . Alcoholic grapefruit everywhere. I alwayz knew this would rule. Can’t wait to sink some 120 minute. Listigovers (96), Ontario, Canada Oct 2, 2009 Pours a nice clear ruby red. Aroma is strong and strangely musty, very musty actually, with some soily notes along with a bit of citrus. The head pours nicey but sadly dissipates quickly. Huge taste and very full bodied. This is a serious beer, strong taste with earthy notes in the end. Not for the faint of heart, very bitter, very fulfilling. I’m still waiting for an IIPA to please me as much as Weyerbacher’s amazingly wonderful Simcoe Unfiltered Double. cwondo (21), Rochester, Michigan, USA Oct 2, 2009 Bottle. I was excited for this one. It poured a nice golden color with a milky white, frothy head that stayed for awhile before dissipating. Very nice lacing. Aroma of hops and malts, and the taste was a wonderful blend of the two, with a bit of caramel and a brief hop attack to end it all. Aftertaste is sweet. Medium bodied. Since finally taking an interest in how my beer tastes, IPA is easily my favorite, and this one does not disappoint. donfardz64 (406), Wellington, New Zealand Sep 28, 2009 Pours amber golden with a thin white head.
Nice hoppy aroma, grapefruit with a bit of pepper and the sweet caramel malt background. Classic American aroma.
A nice balance between malt and hop flavours here. A very sweet caramel dominates the hops for the first few sips, but the bitterness builds and takes it on nicely. A very prominent citric hop character, which dances over the back of the tongue and lingers for quite a while.
A very drinkable and strong flavoured beer, very nice. patrickfannon (271), Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 26, 2009 Bottle. 12 oz. Pours clear orange with a thick, white frothy head. Aroma of spice, raisins, hops, malt, and hints cinnamon. Full body, with a firm, sturdy finish. Excellent American IPA from Dogfish Heah.
