4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
I saw the blurb and I thought "Mere puffery sprinkled liberally with bollocks." and then I sampled:
Appears amber with a marshmallowy creamy white head that left good lace. I certainly did not expect the cake-like aromas that I got when I stuck my (sizeable) nose over the glass and snorted. Like sniffy sherry cask finished whisky along with mandarin, tangelo, cut spruce logs and green cones. Some fresh alcohols, but the predominance is toward glace citrus peel and all sorts of lovely rich dessert. The flavour was another leap altogether. Creamy oranges and green grasses matched with persistent sherbet carbonation and a silky body. It is unctuous and viscous and gives a good whack of bitterness. The finish is enduring and brings out fruit salad laced liberally with golden rum, lychee and creamy orange.
I loved everything about this beer except the emptiness of the bottle. Do I agree with the labelling? Not entirely as I think the Sauvignon Blanc comparison is off (I live near Marlborough and Sav is too light, too fresh). More like Viognier with its tropical fruit and nectarine, which is also present in the finish.
Just a remarkable, remarkable beer.

Floral aroma with notes of malt and lychee. Clear copper colour. Sweet butterscotch front with flavours of orange, bourbon, and cereal; mild bitterness with quick finish. Medium body with mild carbonation. That is a really tasty beer.

Chilled 12 oz bottle from local supermarket. Have been on the West Coast in the Bay Area for 6 months and said would never buy an East Coast brew coz it would not be needed. But tried thus today. Outstanding, as others have remarked a great balance between malt and hops. This is truly one of the greats of US craft brewing. Would love to try on draught.

4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Bottle from ABC. Pours a perfect, shimmering golden amber with a frothy white head and ample lacing. Smells of floral, citrus, herbs, with an earthy backbone and some lingering malt. Flavor is bitter and somewhat sweet throughout. Full bodied, creamy, and smooth on the finish; taste lingers, and it is wonderful. A long time, all-time favorite. Acquire.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Sampled from a bottle at O'Hare Terminal 5. Darkish golden colour with a white head. Malty aromas. Intense flavours based around a really solid malt taste, with tangerine, banana, dried fruit and spices all there. Extreme bitterness. I found too much intensity in this complex beer. Not easy to drink, but I can appreciate the craft that went into it.

Aroma of intense citrus and pine waft out from the orange sudsy pour. The taste is quite a good balance of hops and malt. Very good

Bottle. Copper. Grapefruit, honey, sugar aroma. Big malty taste that changes to bitter grapefruit with a surprising clean finish. This is a big one with decently hidden alcohol. One of the best from dfh.

"Perhaps the best I.P.A. in America" sayith Esquire, and since I drink this more often than any other beer I will have to concur with the great beer brain-trust of Esquire magazine. My favorite IPA with the bonus of being widely available!
