COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
More than 1,500 loyal fans of the brewery and band suggested an ingredient idea and the Dead-inspired story behind it. Our favorite was granola, from California Dead Head and craft beer lover Thomas Butler. “The components of granola – honey, toasted grains, oats and fruit – offer a lot from a beer perspective,” says Thomas, a chemist by day, homebrewer by night. “The idea is to have a bold pale ale that highlights the oats and honey with a nice ‘dank’ hop selection.” American Beauty is brewed with all-American malts and hops, granola and little bit of soul. It’s malty with a big hop kick, and notes of toasted almond and honey round out the flavor profile and balance out the hop bitterness.

A heavy bronze color in the snifter, American Beauty shines a bright medium orange in the light, letting it in but not through to remain completely opaque. The head, barely off-white, seems to never fall past the creamy, heavy full finger it begins with. Extremely creamy webbing to nearly the bottom of the glass proceeds from a thick ring at the top. The smell is sweet and fruity up front, lots of jammy berry with an earthy tone and leafy hops adding balance. A little bit of a honey note accentuates the sweetness, with nut giving some more depth. The berries and earth are first on the tongue. While I wasn't sure going in how I felt about granola in a beer, in the middle it tastes like I'm crunching on it and it works here. Leaf and flora add a light bitterness to balance, and I find lots of nuttiness in the finish. Overall, it's really juicy and fresh, and I really like it. There's complexity, layers to discover and lots of flavor overall. The ratings seem a little low, but it's subjective to a point. It's lightly crisp all the way through. The body is medium and there's a flowing creaminess on the tongue. Neither the crispness nor the smoothness ever waver. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Low fill 750ml bottle pours with a clear copper body that supports a thin light tan head. The aroma offers up soft sweet berry and dark grape notes edged by thin fruity tartness and then to a lesser extent sugary maltiness toward the end of the draw. The taste begins sweet with grape and sugary berry notes heading toward a mild spicy woodiness. As it warms the fruity sensation and woodiness begin to reveal a sweet nuttiness amid berries and grapes and then bitter grapefruit like hoppiness. Decent. It doesn’t enter the realm of harmony anywhere along the journey though as internal conflict rules the day.

Poured from bottle into snifter a nice gold with some tan head. Aroma was malt heavy, grains and honey. Taste was malt, honey, slightly pine hoppy. Has a sweetness in the draw but bitters near the finish. Just a small amount of basement funk. Slightly oily in the mouth. For a Dead beer I think granola was perfect choice.

Strong beer. Lots of honey, some lemon, danker hops, still pretty drinkable. What a long strange trip.

Orange and clear pour with foamy sticky off white head. Had this as part of a draft flight at Jerrys in Andersonville. Super fruity, vanilla, yogurt, orange and a little hops. Delicious

The aroma is soapy with malt and nut honey. The appearance is golden with a sudsy head. The taste is dominated by hops and like the aroma. The palate is average. Overall it’s so so.

On tap at tipsy cow. Clear orange. Aroma of almond, honey, dank hops. Taste is hoppy and very malty, creamy, and a touch boozy. Hops are present and add a golden raisin touch to the big malt. Medium body, syrupy
