COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
More than 1,500 loyal fans of the brewery and band suggested an ingredient idea and the Dead-inspired story behind it. Our favorite was granola, from California Dead Head and craft beer lover Thomas Butler. “The components of granola – honey, toasted grains, oats and fruit – offer a lot from a beer perspective,” says Thomas, a chemist by day, homebrewer by night. “The idea is to have a bold pale ale that highlights the oats and honey with a nice ‘dank’ hop selection.” American Beauty is brewed with all-American malts and hops, granola and little bit of soul. It’s malty with a big hop kick, and notes of toasted almond and honey round out the flavor profile and balance out the hop bitterness.

A heavy bronze color in the snifter, American Beauty shines a bright medium orange in the light, letting it in but not through to remain completely opaque. The head, barely off-white, seems to never fall past the creamy, heavy full finger it begins with. Extremely creamy webbing to nearly the bottom of the glass proceeds from a thick ring at the top. The smell is sweet and fruity up front, lots of jammy berry with an earthy tone and leafy hops adding balance. A little bit of a honey note accentuates the sweetness, with nut giving some more depth. The berries and earth are first on the tongue. While I wasn't sure going in how I felt about granola in a beer, in the middle it tastes like I'm crunching on it and it works here. Leaf and flora add a light bitterness to balance, and I find lots of nuttiness in the finish. Overall, it's really juicy and fresh, and I really like it. There's complexity, layers to discover and lots of flavor overall. The ratings seem a little low, but it's subjective to a point. It's lightly crisp all the way through. The body is medium and there's a flowing creaminess on the tongue. Neither the crispness nor the smoothness ever waver. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours gold and it took me a while to narrow it down to that for some reason I’m seeing to many colors. Small white head, Smells sweet not unlike a Belgium, ale not person. Love the Grateful Dead but I have no idea what granola smells or taste like so I’ll leave that to others. Tastes sweet, malts hops and the taste seems to stick to the tongue (top not under). Overall a good beer for a Great band.

Deep copper and crisp amber coloured body with a nice orange and copper tint. Aroma of light hops, a caramel malt and some subdued fruit scents. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong alcohol flavour at first with a good deal of malt and light hops that are balanced well, but don’t show too much nuance. Aftertaste is fairly bland with some earthy and caramel malt, a touch of hops and only some fruit flavours that have any complexity. Overall, a nice body with a relatively mild and light balance of both hops and malt. Decent, but not worth searching out nor spending a lot of money on this one. I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Costco in Pentagon City, Arlington, Virginia on 05-February-2015 for US$10,99 sampled at home in Washington a few feet away on 26-February-2015.

Love the label, saw the Dead numerous times, had to buy a bottle. Caramel pour with a light beige head. Nice malt aroma. Nutty aroma in the finish. Taste is a malty body, little nutty in the end. Very tasty, easy to drink, nice lacing.

Clear copper pour with not much of a head. Grassy hop and some sweet honey aromas. Definitely some nuttiness coming through as well as the earthy hops in the taste. Very solid offering from DFH. Now off to go find another friend of the devil...

Slightly cloudy golden color with a fairly thick white head. Aroma is mildly sweet and nutty. Flavor is also somewhat sweet with a touch of almond flavor. Some bright pine hops and strong malt balance it out. Fairly interesting, the honey and almond linger in the aftertaste. Wife:3.9

This draft brew from a restaurant poured a small sized head of foamy finely sized white colored bubbles that were mostly diminishing and left behind a softly carbonated transparent golden orange colored body and a good lacing. The mild aroma was hoppy. The crisp mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish with a bitter hoppy aftertaste. The yummy flavor contained notes of bitter mild citrus mild nut and hops. Delicious and one I would certainly like to have again.

Clear, copper pour with a frothy, white head. The aroma has cereal, honey, and mild hops. It has a full body with smooth texture and average carbonation. The taste is bittersweet with alcohol warmth and a slightly dry finish. Time to chill out with some Brokedown Palace and Sugar Magnolia.

Appearance: this beer is a very clear amber color, pours with a very large beige head that settles into a high density Aroma: honey, granola, cream, raisin, Taste: strong amber malt backbone, alcohol, bitter, hints of raisin Palate: bitter aftertaste, heavy mouthfeel, softer carbonation Overall: a lot of bitterness and alcohol dominate this beer, I smell the honey but it's barely evident in the mouth, not its a big beer so not very sessionable ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
