More than 1,500 loyal fans of the brewery and band suggested an ingredient idea and the Dead-inspired story behind it. Our favorite was granola, from California Dead Head and craft beer lover Thomas Butler. “The components of granola – honey, toasted grains, oats and fruit – offer a lot from a beer perspective,” says Thomas, a chemist by day, homebrewer by night. “The idea is to have a bold pale ale that highlights the oats and honey with a nice ‘dank’ hop selection.” American Beauty is brewed with all-American malts and hops, granola and little bit of soul. It’s malty with a big hop kick, and notes of toasted almond and honey round out the flavor profile and balance out the hop bitterness.

Nice amber hue and golden head for this well crafted brew. Oats, granola notes with a nice hop balance. Finishes on the floral side.

(bottle - 750 ml) Orange pour with a fluffy white head. Way too carbonated. Oddly sweet aroma with something I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Wasn’t granola, wasn’t quite honey. Flavor was sweet and dry and bitter all at the same time. Definitely tasted granola, but that shouldn’t be in a beer.

Bottle (750ml): Pours a ruby/golden color. Moderate head. Kind of a sticky feeling. Not a bad IPA just a little bit sweet.

Pours copper from the bomber with a soapy head and lacing. Dank and wet grainy nose. Flavors start with alcohol, grains, citrus and a lightly boozy bitter finish. Oily mouthfeel that feels a bit boozy, slick on the palate. Not bad, but just left of center. Then again, as a tribute to The Dead, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Kind of sweet. Not very hoppy for an Imperial Pale Ale. Not worth the $17 for a 750ml I paid for it but being a Deadhead I had to try it.

Bottle. Moderate malt aromas of grain and cereal, moderate lemon syrup for the hops, light broth for the yeast, with a hint of honey. Head is small, frothy turning wispy, off-white with spotty lacing but good legs, and is mostly diminishing. Color is hazy medium amber/orange. Flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly to moderately acidic, then finishes lightly to moderately sweet and lightly acidic and bitter. Palate is on the fuller side of medium, oily to almost syrupy with a soft soft to lively carbonation and has a moderately to heavy alcoholic finish. Sweeter and more syrupy than most American Strong Ales, but that just makes it more of a slower sipper.

Pours a nice golden color with white head. Cereal grains, malt forward, and nuts on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with some sweetness. Not much for the hop profile though.

This has a really pleasant aroma of fruitiness, like blueberry granola. Has a decent flavor with a solid hoppy undertone.

750ml bottle shared by jprime. a solid ASA, very much like a sweet and smooth IIPA. i liked that you could actually taste the granola. probably a little underrated because of the DFH hate. nice beer.

750 mL bottle courtesy of Chris, served in a branded stem glass. Pours clear amber with a moderate off-white head that mostly remains and leaves a moderate amount of fine lace. The nose has big notes of honey, oats, pale malts and soft resinous hops. The flavour is moderately sweet throughout with honey, pale malts, pale fruit, a touch of almond and delicate resinous hops. The finish is long and malty with adequate balance between dank, resinous hops and sweet pale malts. On the palate it is medium in body with a smooth, syrupy texture and soft carbonation. Overall, this is a decent sweet, fruity pale ale with dank, resinous hops. It becomes perhaps a bit too sweet over time but is otherwise quite nice. 2014-04-25
