This beer is based on a beverage that may have been enjoyed by the Etruscans of Ancient Italy around 800 BC. For this one Sam traveled to Italy with Dr. Pat McGovern where they met up with Teo and Leo (Sam’s buddies from Baladin Brewery and Birra Del Borgo respectively) and researched ingredients from various Etruscan dig sites. The result of their research is a strong ale containing an Italian heirloom grain called Cappelli Senatore, along with pomegranate juice, raisins, and hazelnut flour, together with 3 types of honey: chestnut, wildflower, and clover. The brew was then spiced with several hop flowers, Gentian root and tree resin (think Myrrh) in the kettle. To simulate fermentation in a bronze vessel (which possibly would have been what the Etruscans used), we actually tied a bronze plate inside our modern stainless fermenter which was suspended in the wort as it fermented. The aroma is dominated by pomegranate and spice from the yeast. The flavor is an intriguing interplay between the tangy pomegranate fruit and nuttiness from the hazelnut flower. One can definitely envision sipping this unique brew while relaxing on the Mediterranean coast. Versions of this brew will also be made at Baladin and Birra Del Borgo with the same ingredients but varying processes.

On draft at The Common Table. Pours a dark reddish amber with a medium white head. The aromas are leather, musk, honey, lemon zest. The mouthfeel is dry, syrupy and has a medium body with good carbonation. Cheers!

22oz bottle. Pours translucent copper color with a two finger white rocky head that falls quickly. Smell is very sweet with some banana, licorice, honey, and floral notes. Taste was a bit grainy, toasty, nutty, with caramel malts and a touch of honey sweetness, bittering pomegranate essence, herbal hops. Medium bodied with high carbonation.

Draft at Good Dog. Tulip. Hazy orange amber with a lasting fizzy ring. Some dark toasted wheat flavors off the nose but tastes much juicier than expected. Amber red fruit. Plum pudding. Celery stalks. Blood oranges. Fizzy figs. Burnt mangoes. Apple plum wine. Medium malt caramels. Some black pepper finish at the end. Unusual mix.

A perfect example of Sam getting a wild hare and traveling across the world to make a beer. Actually, it works. It’s not awesome but is interesting. It seems to lean toward witbier characteristics without the same color profile. Fruit and spice are up front. The color is copperish with an average head. Medium body and good carbonation. There is a lot going on with the flavors and its tough to identify most. Some nuttiness, cinnamon, citrus, wheat and yeast. Hard to categorized.

On tap at Hops and Pie. Pour is clear amber with a small white head that quickly dissipated. Dark fruits, red licorice, sweet caramel, corn, floral, earthy, husky, straw, and bready aroma. Taste is corn, dark fruity, cherries, light honey, hay, lightly vegetal, caramel, and spice. Slick mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Really kind-of messy and not my favorite DFH release.

On tap @ Malibu Sundowner. Amber pour with a white head. Really sweet and spicy. Weird nuttiness, some pomegranate, sugar, and caramel. A little bit of tart golden raisin. Tastes of golden raisin, sugar, herbs, and spices. Lightly floral, some hazelnut, pomegranate, and honey. Typical overly sweet beer from DFH.

Reminds me of the inside of a Clifton store. Specifically, the one where Gregg bought his gayass dragon shirt in 1999.

Tasting at brewery. Deep amber color. Wonderful nose with dark fruit, especially some pomegranate. Taste following nose is a bit disappointing. Not particularly well balanced. Some fruit up front but it fades quickly...and ends with just some fizz. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours copper color with a small head. Very complex and sweet taste and aroma. Herbal/perfumy nose and sweet fruit that is even more present in the taste. Spices and hazelnut with some metallic notes in it. Quite special and quite good.

From the bomber. Aroma is complex. Fruity, dark fruity. Flavor is also dark fruits. Really good beer, just hard to put a finger on all of the complex flavors.
