COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer is based on a beverage that may have been enjoyed by the Etruscans of Ancient Italy around 800 BC. For this one Sam traveled to Italy with Dr. Pat McGovern where they met up with Teo and Leo (Sam’s buddies from Baladin Brewery and Birra Del Borgo respectively) and researched ingredients from various Etruscan dig sites. The result of their research is a strong ale containing an Italian heirloom grain called Cappelli Senatore, along with pomegranate juice, raisins, and hazelnut flour, together with 3 types of honey: chestnut, wildflower, and clover. The brew was then spiced with several hop flowers, Gentian root and tree resin (think Myrrh) in the kettle. To simulate fermentation in a bronze vessel (which possibly would have been what the Etruscans used), we actually tied a bronze plate inside our modern stainless fermenter which was suspended in the wort as it fermented. The aroma is dominated by pomegranate and spice from the yeast. The flavor is an intriguing interplay between the tangy pomegranate fruit and nuttiness from the hazelnut flower. One can definitely envision sipping this unique brew while relaxing on the Mediterranean coast. Versions of this brew will also be made at Baladin and Birra Del Borgo with the same ingredients but varying processes.

Pours rusty burnt orange with a slight red tint. Aroma of honey, caramel, hay, mead, and a slight fruity hint (guess it’s the pomegranate). Flavor of honey, earth, grass, sugar, mead, slight fruit. Finishes slightly cloying with a gentle earthy, tangy, fruity aftertaste. Medium-heavy bodied, with high carbonation, but not a creamy mouthfeel. No real alcohol presence, but it is a little cloying. Good aromas and flavors, but I could go for a softer, creamier mouthfeel.

Bottle, flight. pours amber gold, no head or lacing. nose is spicy, a bit sour, some clover. attack is warm, very spicy, background is like a sour. smooth clean finish.

Poured from bottle into tulip glass. I didn't know what to expect but this was nice. Soft carbonation, subtle tartness, and a bit of apple fruitiness gave this more of a wine like feel. Simple, clean, and clear, this beer is not nearly as convoluted as its ingredients suggest. A bit of honey gives it a nice pleasant sweetness. Good.

March 8th, 2013 - Even when the flavors go awry and tragedy strikes, I love these exotic beers rooted in history and brewed from curiosity. Some result in a bottle full of historically accurate off-flavors, but that’s okay. Others, like the Etrusca, end up delicious even after throwing conventional caution to the wind. The Etruscan is a murkier, grizzly bear brown brew with a brunette top of foam, and the smell of raw, cracked wheat, sourdough and sourdough year, saffron, bulgur and couscous - truly an assembly of anthropologically critical grains and staples. The taste is much sweeter and less like an "ancient grain" blend. It begins with a nice, moderate sourness and acidity, adding in cherry and pomegranate sugars, and then after peaking it tapers off with plum and acidity, and a soft, wheat aftertaste, with an overall thick layer of booze.

Aroma: heavy malts, caramel, toffee. Appearance: hazy, dark brown, small head. Taste: light sweet. Palate: bubble gum, lively carbonation. Overall: OK Tradional Ale, not too keen on palate. Pint at Big Brew, Morristown.

750ml Bottle Sept 2014. Slight sour beer-like base, resin center, great peppery aroma. I’m a sucker for "ancient" ales. Loved it.

"Interesting spices in this one, it is both unique, and very Dogfish Head. Malty sweet and yeasty. Honey is light, but present in nose and flavor. Good prickly feel. Cool beer if not quite worth the price."

Bottle (12 oz $16): Interesting beer. Pours mostly clear golden bronze with small white head. Quite a bit of carbonation. Strong pomegranate taste and almost wine like. These to my should be classified a fruit beer.

Big bottle pour@5e Mondial de la Bière, Mulhouse FR, thx Roland & Martina. Viscous brown-amber pour. Nose of berry&grape-infused maple syrup with a hazelnut edge. Dryish mouthfeel with some tannins. Very vinous: chardonnay, pomegranate juice, spiced wine dunked with a shot of Enzianschnaps, some hard to place caramel fruitiness. Easier to drink than some other DFH molecular archeological brews.
