COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer is based on a beverage that may have been enjoyed by the Etruscans of Ancient Italy around 800 BC. For this one Sam traveled to Italy with Dr. Pat McGovern where they met up with Teo and Leo (Sam’s buddies from Baladin Brewery and Birra Del Borgo respectively) and researched ingredients from various Etruscan dig sites. The result of their research is a strong ale containing an Italian heirloom grain called Cappelli Senatore, along with pomegranate juice, raisins, and hazelnut flour, together with 3 types of honey: chestnut, wildflower, and clover. The brew was then spiced with several hop flowers, Gentian root and tree resin (think Myrrh) in the kettle. To simulate fermentation in a bronze vessel (which possibly would have been what the Etruscans used), we actually tied a bronze plate inside our modern stainless fermenter which was suspended in the wort as it fermented. The aroma is dominated by pomegranate and spice from the yeast. The flavor is an intriguing interplay between the tangy pomegranate fruit and nuttiness from the hazelnut flower. One can definitely envision sipping this unique brew while relaxing on the Mediterranean coast. Versions of this brew will also be made at Baladin and Birra Del Borgo with the same ingredients but varying processes.

Thanks Jack for this much wanted beer, these archeological brews do fascinate me! Clear and bright amber beer, good off white head. Palate is light and a little crisp. Dry! Light tangy citrus, dried fruits and sugared crystallised fruits. Thin creamy malt. Very floral this beer and a pinch of herb. Semi dry finish. Nice juxtaposition of flavours.

Bottle at Bruce’s, London - thanks to Jack! Pours clear amber with a small, creamy tan head. Sugary fruits in the nose, toasty bread, strawberries. Medium to big sweet flavor, sweet berries, bready and lightly doughy malts, mellow bitterness. Full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Sweet finish, light warmth, some peppery spice, bit of ripe citrus, bread, low bitterness. Pretty rich stuff but decent overall.

Capped 750 from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours clear copper with a 3 finger creamy off-white head that fizzed away quickly. Aroma is primarily floral with honey notes. Med + body. Flavor is very different. It’s like floral, very floral, with some mixed resin, hazelnut and honey aspects. And it’s pretty bitter throughout. After reflection the pomegranate is detectable. I’m thinking bitter violets for an overall description. Perhaps more US brewers should get into gentian root. Extremely unique ale.

On tap @ Malibu Sundowner. Amber pour with a white head. Really sweet and spicy. Weird nuttiness, some pomegranate, sugar, and caramel. A little bit of tart golden raisin. Tastes of golden raisin, sugar, herbs, and spices. Lightly floral, some hazelnut, pomegranate, and honey. Typical overly sweet beer from DFH.

Bottle. Poured dark copper with an average to large frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate roasted malt, dark fruit and earthy aroma. Medium body with a sticky texture and soft carbonation. Medium earthy dark sweet flavor with a medium dark sweet finish of moderate duration. This is a complex and one of a kind beer.

750 ml bottle poured a clear amber with a lasting amber head. Aromas of carmel, spice, honey, pomeganate, raisin and hazelnuts. Palate was medium bodied and crisp. Flavors of carmel, hazelnut, honey, spice and light fruittiness with a crisp lingering hazelnut finishg. Just plain strange tasting beer! Sam Quit jacking around with your weird vacations and just brew some tasty beers I know you’re capable of!
