This beer is based on a beverage that may have been enjoyed by the Etruscans of Ancient Italy around 800 BC. For this one Sam traveled to Italy with Dr. Pat McGovern where they met up with Teo and Leo (Sam’s buddies from Baladin Brewery and Birra Del Borgo respectively) and researched ingredients from various Etruscan dig sites. The result of their research is a strong ale containing an Italian heirloom grain called Cappelli Senatore, along with pomegranate juice, raisins, and hazelnut flour, together with 3 types of honey: chestnut, wildflower, and clover. The brew was then spiced with several hop flowers, Gentian root and tree resin (think Myrrh) in the kettle. To simulate fermentation in a bronze vessel (which possibly would have been what the Etruscans used), we actually tied a bronze plate inside our modern stainless fermenter which was suspended in the wort as it fermented. The aroma is dominated by pomegranate and spice from the yeast. The flavor is an intriguing interplay between the tangy pomegranate fruit and nuttiness from the hazelnut flower. One can definitely envision sipping this unique brew while relaxing on the Mediterranean coast. Versions of this brew will also be made at Baladin and Birra Del Borgo with the same ingredients but varying processes.

There is a flavor in this beer that is both awesome and totally foreign to me. Maybe it’s the "tree resin (think Myrrh) "

750ml Bottle Sept 2014. Slight sour beer-like base, resin center, great peppery aroma. I’m a sucker for "ancient" ales. Loved it.

Bottle. As you pour this, at first you think it’ll be golden. But it settles into a red, almost juice-looking thing. Whatever head it started with disappears almost immediately, finalizing the kool aid visuals. The aroma is similarly fruity, but also hints at some alcohol, not unlike some fruit wines or the strawberry syrup at IHOP. This drinks with the ease of something that comes in a box with children’s meals ... sweet, fruity and plain yummy. There’s no way I’d predict there was 8% alcohol in this. Where’s my happy meal? Aroma: Very complex and winey aromas--dried fruit, honey, berry with hints of earthy yeast aromas. Appearance: Clear bright amber with minimal head. Taste: Medium-heavy sweetness with light bitterness and medium sourness to balance. Palate: Full body, thick oily texture, soft carbonation, long fruity finish. Overall: Wow! This has so many flavors working with each other and against each other. Every sip reveals something different, but still in harmony with the others. Nothing unpleasant here, though a bit too fruity for my taste. Still, this is really well done.

UPDATED: JUL 6, 2013 The smell is of a rich honey, the color is a true clear bronze with a nice head that eventually dissipates. A very unique, great beer. The hazelnut/pomegranate taste is terrific. 9.5 BD 8.5Joek- reminds me of a hard cider. 7-4-13 9.7 BD; 9.9 Joek

750 ml bottle. Pours a slightly hazy bronze hue with a medium beige head with good retention. Aroma is doughy and full of clovey phenols, honey, grain, fried corn tortilla, earthy. Taste is lightly sweet and savory before turning on a lightly sour note (from the pomegranates, I imagine). Body is a little on the thin side. This is really well made and put together; quite tasty.
