COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer is based on a beverage that may have been enjoyed by the Etruscans of Ancient Italy around 800 BC. For this one Sam traveled to Italy with Dr. Pat McGovern where they met up with Teo and Leo (Sam’s buddies from Baladin Brewery and Birra Del Borgo respectively) and researched ingredients from various Etruscan dig sites. The result of their research is a strong ale containing an Italian heirloom grain called Cappelli Senatore, along with pomegranate juice, raisins, and hazelnut flour, together with 3 types of honey: chestnut, wildflower, and clover. The brew was then spiced with several hop flowers, Gentian root and tree resin (think Myrrh) in the kettle. To simulate fermentation in a bronze vessel (which possibly would have been what the Etruscans used), we actually tied a bronze plate inside our modern stainless fermenter which was suspended in the wort as it fermented. The aroma is dominated by pomegranate and spice from the yeast. The flavor is an intriguing interplay between the tangy pomegranate fruit and nuttiness from the hazelnut flower. One can definitely envision sipping this unique brew while relaxing on the Mediterranean coast. Versions of this brew will also be made at Baladin and Birra Del Borgo with the same ingredients but varying processes.

Tasting at brewery. Deep amber color. Wonderful nose with dark fruit, especially some pomegranate. Taste following nose is a bit disappointing. Not particularly well balanced. Some fruit up front but it fades quickly...and ends with just some fizz. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft: Poured a light amber color ale with a medium size foamy head with OK retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of hazelnut and unrefined grain is more or less interesting. Taste is also dominated by unrefined grain with some strong notes of hazelnut with some residual sugars which is probably derived of the honey that was added to this beer. Body is light with medium carbonation and with no apparent alcohol. I appreciate all the historical research that went into this beer but not sure I really enjoy the final product enough to try this one again.

Honey clover rasins and somethin come from this slightly hazy amberish purpleish brew with no head The taste is pomegranate kinda some crazy honey and spice. Its weird but not super horrible. But very different. The taste lingers like none other and i wish it had some more hops. Its a medium body with good carb. Worth a try if ur daring.

Sample at the brewery. Earthy aroma. Flavor was slightly sweet and very earthy. Sweetness I think is from the honey. Enjoyable will drink again.

Dogfish Head, Etrusca, bomber. APPEARANCE- great light brown color. Nice head, but it dissipates quickly. Very carbonated as there’s a lot of bubbles originating from the bottom of the glass. NOSE - Distinct, but unlike most other beers I’ve tried. Very earthy, but difficult to distinguish. FLAVOR - very unique flavor. Slightly sweet but not malty, and certainly no pronounced hop flavors at all. It evolves as it warms up to reveal the sweetness has honey notes. NOTES - this is a very exciting beer in the ancient series. It’s not an everyday drinker, but I enjoy thinking about what a beer may have been like almost 3000 years ago. I was able to taste this alongside the Birra del Borgo (one of the other collaborators on this experiment), and it was a lot of fun.

Good brew cold and poured into a glass. Dark brown, opaque, not much head or anything. Aroma is dusty; mildew. It has lots of dark fruit, raisins, plums, grapes, coconut milk, roasted malts, mild spice, chocolate and funk. Taste is more robust and fruity than the aroma. The flavors are dominated by raisin, chocolate and malt. Less of that funkiness comes out.

Bottle. Pours dark amber with a small off-white head that left spotty lacing. Aroma of honey, caramel, herbs, nuts and spice. Flavor was sweet with honey, herbs, pomegranate, earth, light caramel, hazelnut and spices. Medium body, sticky texture, dry sweet finish.

Dungeons and Dragons is nothing without a weird new beer to go with it (or so my friends and I have always believed.) The story behind this one was pretty interesting, but then again they always are, aren’t they? Head was short lived and white, while the beer was brownish amber. Aroma was fruity and herbal with just a hint of spiciness. Flavor was tart, with notes of pomegranate, rhubarb, and honey. It was a little on the dry side and very complex, making it a perfect candidate to enjoy over the course of a nice long evening. Quite enjoyable!

Bottle while hanging with the lagunitas crew in chicago, from notes. Sweet, with caramel, moscato wine and dark grapes. Good.

Very interesting beer. Smallish had kind of a muddy color short-lived head. Aroma is honey spices hint of acid. Flavor is fabulous like aroma much more concentrated and exotic. Really good beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
