COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer is based on a beverage that may have been enjoyed by the Etruscans of Ancient Italy around 800 BC. For this one Sam traveled to Italy with Dr. Pat McGovern where they met up with Teo and Leo (Sam’s buddies from Baladin Brewery and Birra Del Borgo respectively) and researched ingredients from various Etruscan dig sites. The result of their research is a strong ale containing an Italian heirloom grain called Cappelli Senatore, along with pomegranate juice, raisins, and hazelnut flour, together with 3 types of honey: chestnut, wildflower, and clover. The brew was then spiced with several hop flowers, Gentian root and tree resin (think Myrrh) in the kettle. To simulate fermentation in a bronze vessel (which possibly would have been what the Etruscans used), we actually tied a bronze plate inside our modern stainless fermenter which was suspended in the wort as it fermented. The aroma is dominated by pomegranate and spice from the yeast. The flavor is an intriguing interplay between the tangy pomegranate fruit and nuttiness from the hazelnut flower. One can definitely envision sipping this unique brew while relaxing on the Mediterranean coast. Versions of this brew will also be made at Baladin and Birra Del Borgo with the same ingredients but varying processes.

Pours an orange red color with a medium sized foamy off white head. Notes of peanut butter, dirt, yeast, brown sugar, and fruit.

Bottle: pours light brown with a fizzy white head that quickly disappears, aroma of honey, taste is sweet, with a nice light warming finish. Reminds me a little bit of Bier de Miel.

On tap 5 oz. flight at Dogfish Head in Gaithersburg, MD, where it was listed as. "Burrs Etrusca." Clear, bright copper with a small head that vanished to a thin wispy ring and trivial lacing. Aroma of honey, raisins, rich fruit (pomegranate?), brown sugar and bourbon. Taste of honey, pomegranate, raisins, apple and spicy yeast. Medium body and medium/high carbonation. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pour on tap at Black Bottle, clear reddish pour with white head, aroma brought notes of flour, big nutty floury notes, very odd, slight earth, slight red and dark fruits, hints of herbal notes, don’t know what to make of this. Taste is very flour forward, some nuts, cocoa, hints of herbs into some red and dark fruit, slight earth, finishing sweet, bitter.

Pours clear copper with a thin fizzy head. Aroma of fruit, honey and spices. Taste is oddly not that sweet given fruit and honey that’s still quite prevalent. Certainly unusual.

Tap @ Black Bottle. Pours a hazy copper orange appearance with very little head. Funky fruity, quite spicy, big pomegranate, slightly nutty aroma. Flavor is really dominated by notes of pomegranates and raspberries with a hint of olives. Not a big fan.

Barcade, Brooklyn tap ($7): Pours clear copper with a small head... whatever there was dissipated quickly. Aroma is Dr. Pepper, herbs, sugar, early 1900s patent medicine, and pomegranate. Taste is somewhat sweet. It is kind of a hodgepodge of everything mentioned above. My girlfriend found that Dr. Pepper was one of the main things going on. Complex, but weirdly balanced. I didn’t get any pepper or nuts in this.

Draft. Pours almost clear medium copper brown with a very very thin head. Tastes like pine, flowers, grassy, roasted. Very complex and strange. Medium body and low/medium carbonation. Smells like herbs, malty, musky, rotten.

There is a flavor in this beer that is both awesome and totally foreign to me. Maybe it’s the "tree resin (think Myrrh) "
