COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer is based on a beverage that may have been enjoyed by the Etruscans of Ancient Italy around 800 BC. For this one Sam traveled to Italy with Dr. Pat McGovern where they met up with Teo and Leo (Sam’s buddies from Baladin Brewery and Birra Del Borgo respectively) and researched ingredients from various Etruscan dig sites. The result of their research is a strong ale containing an Italian heirloom grain called Cappelli Senatore, along with pomegranate juice, raisins, and hazelnut flour, together with 3 types of honey: chestnut, wildflower, and clover. The brew was then spiced with several hop flowers, Gentian root and tree resin (think Myrrh) in the kettle. To simulate fermentation in a bronze vessel (which possibly would have been what the Etruscans used), we actually tied a bronze plate inside our modern stainless fermenter which was suspended in the wort as it fermented. The aroma is dominated by pomegranate and spice from the yeast. The flavor is an intriguing interplay between the tangy pomegranate fruit and nuttiness from the hazelnut flower. One can definitely envision sipping this unique brew while relaxing on the Mediterranean coast. Versions of this brew will also be made at Baladin and Birra Del Borgo with the same ingredients but varying processes.

On tap @ Malibu Sundowner. Amber pour with a white head. Really sweet and spicy. Weird nuttiness, some pomegranate, sugar, and caramel. A little bit of tart golden raisin. Tastes of golden raisin, sugar, herbs, and spices. Lightly floral, some hazelnut, pomegranate, and honey. Typical overly sweet beer from DFH.

Reminds me of the inside of a Clifton store. Specifically, the one where Gregg bought his gayass dragon shirt in 1999.

Tasting at brewery. Deep amber color. Wonderful nose with dark fruit, especially some pomegranate. Taste following nose is a bit disappointing. Not particularly well balanced. Some fruit up front but it fades quickly...and ends with just some fizz. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours copper color with a small head. Very complex and sweet taste and aroma. Herbal/perfumy nose and sweet fruit that is even more present in the taste. Spices and hazelnut with some metallic notes in it. Quite special and quite good.

From the bomber. Aroma is complex. Fruity, dark fruity. Flavor is also dark fruits. Really good beer, just hard to put a finger on all of the complex flavors.

Sadly, my very first disappointment with Dogfish. I guess it had to happen eventually. I had my suspicions going in, because in my experience any beer that uses "real juice" is treading on dangerous ground. The aroma and the first few sips gave off an abbey-like quality with an interesting kick on the finish. As I continued to drink, I realised it wasn’t good - a seemingly solid beer ruined by sickly sweet fermentation. This honestly tastes like half Midas Touch, half 2.99 sparkling wine. All things considered, it’s far from undrinkable, but it’s an experiment gone wrong.

Bottle from total wine Sterling. Pours Light brown with an inch of brown foam. Doesn’t leave any lacing in the glass. Has a kind of fruity sweetness on the nose.a mix of flavor sensations on the tongue that lean towards sweet and dry. Finishes clean. An Interesting beer that hides its alcohol well though I’m not sure I’d have another.

7/6/13. 750mL bottle shared by Brian at his moving/cellar cleaning party. Copper/amber pour with a small fizzy khaki head. Very herbal aroma, almost perfumey in a way, with lots of sticky, sweet fruits. The sweet fruits pop even more in the flavor with lingering herbal perfumey aspects... reminds me of Grandma’s house in a bad way. Weird.

Copper colored pour. Small layer of off-white bubbles that quickly disappear. No lacing. Aroma of fruit and incense. Almost like a dirty hippy. Dry spicy flavor. Much like licking a dirty hippy. Not overly offensive, but not overly good either.

750 ml bottle from The Party Soure. Pours a super clear orange color with a minimal off-white head. Lots of spice on the aroma; I guess that’s the gentian root and myrrh and heirloom grains, as if I could identify those otherwise. Also lots of fruit juice, honey, hazelnut. Flavor is the same way, loaded with spices and juices. Minimal malt and zero hop character. Light-bodied, with crisp carbonation and a crisp, fruity mouthfeel. Odd beer, like most of their traditional ale experiments. Worth trying out.
