COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer is based on a beverage that may have been enjoyed by the Etruscans of Ancient Italy around 800 BC. For this one Sam traveled to Italy with Dr. Pat McGovern where they met up with Teo and Leo (Sam’s buddies from Baladin Brewery and Birra Del Borgo respectively) and researched ingredients from various Etruscan dig sites. The result of their research is a strong ale containing an Italian heirloom grain called Cappelli Senatore, along with pomegranate juice, raisins, and hazelnut flour, together with 3 types of honey: chestnut, wildflower, and clover. The brew was then spiced with several hop flowers, Gentian root and tree resin (think Myrrh) in the kettle. To simulate fermentation in a bronze vessel (which possibly would have been what the Etruscans used), we actually tied a bronze plate inside our modern stainless fermenter which was suspended in the wort as it fermented. The aroma is dominated by pomegranate and spice from the yeast. The flavor is an intriguing interplay between the tangy pomegranate fruit and nuttiness from the hazelnut flower. One can definitely envision sipping this unique brew while relaxing on the Mediterranean coast. Versions of this brew will also be made at Baladin and Birra Del Borgo with the same ingredients but varying processes.

Aromas of pomegranates, red berries, bananas, and raisins. Clear light red, head foam vanishes quickly, but bubbles constantly. Some sweetness, some tartness, and some farmhouse funkiness. Medium-full bodied, moderate carbonation, and has a dry, fruity finish.

Very interesting beer. Smallish had kind of a muddy color short-lived head. Aroma is honey spices hint of acid. Flavor is fabulous like aroma much more concentrated and exotic. Really good beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Rated on 02-28-2013 at DFH Brewpub, Redobeth Beach, DE. This draft beer has a very small beige head with a short retention, golden transparent body, no carbonation noted, and no lacing. The aroma is malt, wheat, honey, fruity, raisins, and spicy. The flavor is spicy, sweet, malt, honey, raisins, fruity, and has a dry finish. This beer is medium bodied and the mouthfeel is mild. This beer is quaffable, a sipping beer, somewhat complex, worth trying, and a beer I would drink again.

Pours a brownish kinda amber with a medium bubbly white head. Aroma of herbs, nuts, brown sugar, grapes and a malty sweetness. Flavor was also herbal with nuts, some tropical fruits and sugary.

Bottle: Pours a nice golden bronze color with a quickly dissipating white head. The aroma is full of lots of fruit and herbs... very intense aromas that are hard to identify. Some earthiness as well. The taste is slightly tart, with lots of the fruitiness coming through again. Light in body, with a soft carbonation, this is a nice drinker... Very complex flavors that are unique.

Amazing how fast the thin head dissipates. Smells of alcohol and floral arrangements. Taste a little bitter and some pomegranates slash rhubarb. Palette is on the thin side with a nice extended finish.

First of probably many at Fishales. Bronze dare I say mauve color with no real head. Sweet aroma from grapes and sugar. Sweet flavor with some light wine and grape juice notes too. Pleasant and easy drinking.

750ml bottle purchased @ One Stop Market back in March 2013. Snifter displays a amber with a (dare I say) Bronze color. Lasting ring of head with some retention. Aroma reminds me of incense burning in a Middle Eastern flea market. Sir, would you like to buy a Persian rug? No seriously, It smells like incense, that’s all I get.

Flavor has light pomegranate juice, Lightly tart, cracked black pepper and hints of some type of honey. Lightly grainy body and has some wheat feel to it. The carbonation is lively that kicks up the pepper flavor quite a bit. Medium- bodied, moderate carbonation. Texture is on the syrupy sweet side. I really wanted to like this but… meh. It’s just ok. Different indeed.

On tap at the Forge. Appearance: finger of off white head that is gone almost immediately, deep honey amber color, slightly cloudy, no lacing. Aroma: heavy pomegranate, light smoke and what I am told is mehr, somewhat musty smelling. Palate: medium body, sticky texture, soft to flat carbonation. Taste: coating sweetness of a mead, but fruit sweetness of a wine almost, lightest bitterness on the way out. Overall, a very unique beer, different in all sorts of ways. I enjoyed ten ounces, but have no need to drink more in one sitting. My favorite of the two ancients I have had so far.

A very unique beer. Pours a slightly cloudy bronze color, with a white head that dissipates very quickly. Smells awesome, like apples, pomegranate and herbs. Taste is very carbonated and dry, almost like champagne. Some pomegranate in the taste, and has a very bready/yeast quality that sticks on the tongue. Had in the bottle.
