COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer is based on a beverage that may have been enjoyed by the Etruscans of Ancient Italy around 800 BC. For this one Sam traveled to Italy with Dr. Pat McGovern where they met up with Teo and Leo (Sam’s buddies from Baladin Brewery and Birra Del Borgo respectively) and researched ingredients from various Etruscan dig sites. The result of their research is a strong ale containing an Italian heirloom grain called Cappelli Senatore, along with pomegranate juice, raisins, and hazelnut flour, together with 3 types of honey: chestnut, wildflower, and clover. The brew was then spiced with several hop flowers, Gentian root and tree resin (think Myrrh) in the kettle. To simulate fermentation in a bronze vessel (which possibly would have been what the Etruscans used), we actually tied a bronze plate inside our modern stainless fermenter which was suspended in the wort as it fermented. The aroma is dominated by pomegranate and spice from the yeast. The flavor is an intriguing interplay between the tangy pomegranate fruit and nuttiness from the hazelnut flower. One can definitely envision sipping this unique brew while relaxing on the Mediterranean coast. Versions of this brew will also be made at Baladin and Birra Del Borgo with the same ingredients but varying processes.

Thanks to ben4321, Aroma is super sweet..smells of raisins. Nice copper color, and a bit of head. Nice and foamy on the palate. Overall quite an interesting beer, but I a word it’s sweet.

Bottle @ Post-Easter Procrastination, Ulfborg. Pours clear amber with small and quickly disappearing off-white head. Clear aroma of malt, caramel and barrel, with notes of yeast. Sweetish flavour of malt and fruit with notes of fruit and barrel. Acidic aftertaste. Quite boozy - in fact, it tastes of more than the 8.5% stated on the label. Okay, though-

Not my favorite but still really interesting. Taste musky but it is actually pretty enjoyable.

APPEARANCE- very little haze, copper color. head disipates rather quickly SMELL- spiced dubbel like character, dark fruits, sweetness and beligian yeast TASTE- much like the smell, lots of dubbel characteristics with some unfamiliar spices, may be the myrrh and genetian root. little bit of pomegranate on the tip and yeast on the finish MOUTHFEEL- semi thick but dry. suprisingly carbonated on the tongue for the lack of head retention OVERALL-interesting beer but not one I’d try again, its like a belgian dubbel with unfamiliar spices

Damn the torpedos. This is a really classy beer. Etruscans of Ancient Italy around 800 BC. would have drank this back in the day.

Bottle. Pours a murky dark brown with a big off-white head that fades to nothing. Spicy aroma, with nuts, grains, pomegranate juice. Taste is sweet and crisp, with bready yeast, nuts, lots of sweet pomegranate and honey, and ending with a spicy bite. Lingering sparkly spicy sweetness. Kind of fun but needs more oomph.

tap - This unusual amber brew has almost no head. It has a mild, yeasty, malt aroma. The flavor is sweet and yeasty, somehow spicy like Belgian yeast to me. Carbonation is low and alcohol is apparent. Interesting. Frankly the flavors are hard to place, but it’s pretty good.
