COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In honor of the 40th anniversary of the original release of Bitches Brew, Miles Davis’ 1970 paradigm-shifting landmark fusion breakthrough, we’ve created our own Bitches Brew - a bold, dark beer that’s a fusion of three threads imperial stout and one thread honey beer with gesho root, a gustatory analog to Miles’ masterpiece.Featuring the album’s iconic artwork, created by the late Mati Klarwein, on its label, Dogfish Head’s Bitches Brew will be unveiled at SAVOR, An American Craft Beer & Food Experience, June 5, National Building Museum, Washington DC. Haven’t experienced the Bitches Brew album? Two 40th anniversary editions of Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew -- a Legacy Edition and a deluxe Collector’s Edition -- will be available Tuesday, August 31. The newly created ale is designed, according to Dogfish founder and president Sam Calagione, "as the ultimate partner for chili or spicy curry chicken" and best enjoyed "sipped cool, not cold, from a snifter or red wine glass while listening to the Bitches Brew album." Calagione was drawn to the alchemical spirits in Bitches Brew right out of college, acquiring a copy of the album "within months of the first time I brewed a batch of homebrew in my apartment in New York City. I listened to it when I was writing my Dogfish business plan. I wanted Dogfish Head to be a maniacally inventive and creative brewery, analog beer for the digital age. You could say that my dream was to have Dogfish Head, in some small way, stand for the same thing in the beer world that Bitches Brew stands for in the jazz world. You can imagine how excited we are to be doing this project 17 years after I wrote that business plan." "There’s a spirit of innovation, of creativity and individuality, thats at the core of Miles’ music," said Adam Block, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Legacy Recordings. "Sam and Dogfish Head approach their art from the same place and consequently the marriage is an easy and cool one." Dogfish Head and its "off-centered ales for off-centered people" were the subject of "A Better Brew," an article in The New Yorker (Nov. 24, 2008) examining the rise of extreme beer. "Beer has lagged well behind wine and organic produce in the ongoing reinvention of American cuisine. Yet the change over the past twenty years has been startling," wrote Burkhard Bilger. "Dogfish is something of a mascot for this unruly movement. In the thirteen years since Calagione founded the brewery, it has gone from being the smallest in the country to the thirty-eighth largest. Calagione makes more beer with at least ten per cent alcohol than any other brewer, and his odd ingredients are often drawn from ancient or obscure beer traditions. It is to Budweiser what a bouillabaisse is to fish stock."

Had at Capone’s with Katie and Justin. Pour was thick dark body with Little head. Probably because it was in a flight glass. Aroma was full of deep malts and a tinge of sweetness. Perhaps the honey. Flavor was thick and smooth roasted malts, molasis and honey. Awesome brew.

Ah yes, bitches Brew. I own this album(double CD) as my father did before me(Vinyl). 25oz bottle which poured black with nice rich mocha colored head. Aroma of coffee, sweet/dark chocolate, and a light spicy note I do not have a name for. Rich, creamy, and smooth on the palate. The taste was rich chocolate, light spice, light coffee, light piny hops, with a semi sweet finish. Nice balance with alcohol totally hidden.

2010 Bottle. So an imperial stout mixed with a Tej? Sounds interesting. Pours with a black body and a small, quick to fade tan head. Very low retention. Some lacing and glass coating. Aroma of chocolate, roast, leather, licorice, spices, herbs, earth, vanilla and coffee. Flavor is big and roasty, lots of earth, and roasty bitterness. Velvety. Tobacco, lots of it. Sort of the herbal, tannic, earthiness that I get from Palo Santo. Interesting roast complexity. Lively bubbles, a hint of alcohol. Not a huge body for an imperial stout. Interesting and different.

Opened a bottle at a release at Whole Foods in Chicago. Pours black with a creamy mocha head. Aroma of cocoa and honey, rich and sweet, malted milk balls and a little bit of a dark bitter cocoa note. Flavor is much the same, cocoa powder abounds amongst sweet rich caramel and a touch of dark fruit. Rich molasses and again malted milk ball dry sweetness really keep this from seeming like too heavy of an imperial stout. Medium to full body and a soft carbonation. A nice imperial stout that doesn’t necessarily stand up with the big boys but is a good beer nonetheless

Opaque black with a small tan head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of roast, smoke, burnt wood, light honey, caramel, and alcohol. Taste of roasted malts, dark chocolate, smoked wood, some burnt toast, honey, light spices and some alcohol.

Another Imperial concoction from Dogfish. A very interesting beer, I had high expectations and they were met. A very rich appearance - coffee black with a deep tan head which slid slowly down the side of the glass and soon disappeared with the light carbonation. A roasty malt aroma lightly hopped. Earthy, woody, smoky aroma. The taste is medium sweet from the honey and malts with a lightly bitter finish that lingers. It has a savory taste and feel which fills your mouth with a thick imperial body, yet a creamy soft texture. Overall a thick rich, not too sweet, stout - very enjoyable to the senses. Dogfish delivers the goods.

750ml bottle drunk with, of course, the iconic "bitches brew" album. completely black under a small, thick, brown head. roasted barley and caramel aroma. i have no idea what gesho root is(almost all google searches bring up this beer instead of the plant/root itself), it does have certain honey and berry-like sweet/tart-ness to it. full bodied. a stout that strays from any coffee or chocolate groove, and focuses on a strict roasted barley flavor. a scientist/musician myself, i’m always a fan of DFH’s experimental, face melting concoctions.
