COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In honor of the 40th anniversary of the original release of Bitches Brew, Miles Davisí 1970 paradigm-shifting landmark fusion breakthrough, weíve created our own Bitches Brew - a bold, dark beer thatís a fusion of three threads imperial stout and one thread honey beer with gesho root, a gustatory analog to Milesí masterpiece.Featuring the albumís iconic artwork, created by the late Mati Klarwein, on its label, Dogfish Headís Bitches Brew will be unveiled at SAVOR, An American Craft Beer & Food Experience, June 5, National Building Museum, Washington DC. Havenít experienced the Bitches Brew album? Two 40th anniversary editions of Miles Davisí Bitches Brew -- a Legacy Edition and a deluxe Collectorís Edition -- will be available Tuesday, August 31. The newly created ale is designed, according to Dogfish founder and president Sam Calagione, "as the ultimate partner for chili or spicy curry chicken" and best enjoyed "sipped cool, not cold, from a snifter or red wine glass while listening to the Bitches Brew album." Calagione was drawn to the alchemical spirits in Bitches Brew right out of college, acquiring a copy of the album "within months of the first time I brewed a batch of homebrew in my apartment in New York City. I listened to it when I was writing my Dogfish business plan. I wanted Dogfish Head to be a maniacally inventive and creative brewery, analog beer for the digital age. You could say that my dream was to have Dogfish Head, in some small way, stand for the same thing in the beer world that Bitches Brew stands for in the jazz world. You can imagine how excited we are to be doing this project 17 years after I wrote that business plan." "Thereís a spirit of innovation, of creativity and individuality, thats at the core of Milesí music," said Adam Block, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Legacy Recordings. "Sam and Dogfish Head approach their art from the same place and consequently the marriage is an easy and cool one." Dogfish Head and its "off-centered ales for off-centered people" were the subject of "A Better Brew," an article in The New Yorker (Nov. 24, 2008) examining the rise of extreme beer. "Beer has lagged well behind wine and organic produce in the ongoing reinvention of American cuisine. Yet the change over the past twenty years has been startling," wrote Burkhard Bilger. "Dogfish is something of a mascot for this unruly movement. In the thirteen years since Calagione founded the brewery, it has gone from being the smallest in the country to the thirty-eighth largest. Calagione makes more beer with at least ten per cent alcohol than any other brewer, and his odd ingredients are often drawn from ancient or obscure beer traditions. It is to Budweiser what a bouillabaisse is to fish stock."

750ml bottle. Roast, chocolate, rum, something else is going on in the background, I would say that is the subtle aroma of the honey coming through. Flavor is roast, dark chocolate, floral, subtle honey and rum. The mouthfeel is thinner than one would expect at the end after feeling somewhat substantial early on. The beer was a wonderful pairing with dark chocolate cake with dark chocolate and raspberry puree frosting. The honey seems to add a nice, albiet subtle, flavor and also thins out what might otherwise be a chewy beer.

Wow, even with all the hype from the over-dramatic TV episode surrounding this beer, it still does not disappoint. I get a substantial amount of coffee from aroma and flavor. The taste also combines dry roasted malts and sweet honey. The honey balances the dryness without making the beer too sweet. The body is medium/full bodied and the palate is very smooth. Good stuff that Iím glad I bought a couple bottles of.

Bottle shared. Pours a viscous black body with a tan coffee esk head. Malty and roast y body. Smoked malt, dark chocolate, deep coffee rinds. Licorice and a viscous malty warming body. A chocolate honey warming with solid smoked undertones. Not bad dogfish, well done for how bizarre this recipe is.

Pours black with a nice creamy beige head - looks incredible. Aroma is dark chocolate, smoke, brown sugar, touch of honey. Flavor is dark roasty chocolate malt, subtle burnt coffee, a hint of smoke and earth, with a slight honey sweetness in the background. Very nice imperial stout.

Pours an opaque black with small amount of foamy tan head. Aroma is burnt brown sugar, raisins, sweet chocolate and sugared pear. Flavor is really nicely balanced. Very smooth creaminess, chocolate, some bitter coffee flavors but not too much, bit of tart fruit and citric hops. Extremely drinkable for an imperial stout. Wish I had a few bottles.

A really interesting beer. While clearly a stout, the malt is toned down a bit by the addition of the specialties. Very enjoyable. Donít kn ow if Miles would have liked but id sure did.

the aroma is of roasted malts and a little hop note that suggests this is going to be a bit different than the other imperial stouts ive had. The taste is equally impressive with the sweetness of honey in the forefront that really adds to the flavor and does not dominate in any way. the roasted malts have a bit of a chocolate flavor and coffee not unlike their world wide stout without the abv burn. and thats the last thing, the abv is not present anywhere in the taste, maybe a little burn in the back of the throat, but really nothing that would make it off putting. great beer,

Thanks Nolan and bro! Pours pitch black with a small coffee colored head. Aroma has rich molasses, dark fruits, and a nutty/woody characteristic. Slight bitterness that fades into toffee and caramel, and ends with warm malt. Very smooth and incredibly full-bodied. Not sure it lives up to the hype, but in itís defense, there was a lot of hype to live up to. Very tasty offering.
