In honor of the 40th anniversary of the original release of Bitches Brew, Miles Davisí 1970 paradigm-shifting landmark fusion breakthrough, weíve created our own Bitches Brew - a bold, dark beer thatís a fusion of three threads imperial stout and one thread honey beer with gesho root, a gustatory analog to Milesí masterpiece.Featuring the albumís iconic artwork, created by the late Mati Klarwein, on its label, Dogfish Headís Bitches Brew will be unveiled at SAVOR, An American Craft Beer & Food Experience, June 5, National Building Museum, Washington DC. Havenít experienced the Bitches Brew album? Two 40th anniversary editions of Miles Davisí Bitches Brew -- a Legacy Edition and a deluxe Collectorís Edition -- will be available Tuesday, August 31. The newly created ale is designed, according to Dogfish founder and president Sam Calagione, "as the ultimate partner for chili or spicy curry chicken" and best enjoyed "sipped cool, not cold, from a snifter or red wine glass while listening to the Bitches Brew album." Calagione was drawn to the alchemical spirits in Bitches Brew right out of college, acquiring a copy of the album "within months of the first time I brewed a batch of homebrew in my apartment in New York City. I listened to it when I was writing my Dogfish business plan. I wanted Dogfish Head to be a maniacally inventive and creative brewery, analog beer for the digital age. You could say that my dream was to have Dogfish Head, in some small way, stand for the same thing in the beer world that Bitches Brew stands for in the jazz world. You can imagine how excited we are to be doing this project 17 years after I wrote that business plan." "Thereís a spirit of innovation, of creativity and individuality, thats at the core of Milesí music," said Adam Block, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Legacy Recordings. "Sam and Dogfish Head approach their art from the same place and consequently the marriage is an easy and cool one." Dogfish Head and its "off-centered ales for off-centered people" were the subject of "A Better Brew," an article in The New Yorker (Nov. 24, 2008) examining the rise of extreme beer. "Beer has lagged well behind wine and organic produce in the ongoing reinvention of American cuisine. Yet the change over the past twenty years has been startling," wrote Burkhard Bilger. "Dogfish is something of a mascot for this unruly movement. In the thirteen years since Calagione founded the brewery, it has gone from being the smallest in the country to the thirty-eighth largest. Calagione makes more beer with at least ten per cent alcohol than any other brewer, and his odd ingredients are often drawn from ancient or obscure beer traditions. It is to Budweiser what a bouillabaisse is to fish stock."

Poured from bottle into snifter. Dark black pour with moderate head that quickly dissipates. Very tasty brew. Mouthfeel is spot on. It's thick without being syrupy and low in carbonation without being flat. The flavor also excels. This a sweet brew, but not cloyingly so. It's got enough bitterness and complexity to not verge into "dessert beer" territory. Really enjoyed this.

Choc and honew with a hint of something sweet fill my nose with this very dark brown brew with a nice choc brown head. The pour is nice and thick with little evidence of carb until the head gathers. The tast is slightly complex with chocolate and almost a tart-bittersweet taste up front and a honey choc after taste. There is a secondary flavor in the aftertaste that reminds me almost of a chreey cordial. It has a very full body and very smooth. Worth a buy for sure

The Sampler, Brooklyn tap: Pours black with a light brown head. Aroma is chocolate, honey, roasted malts, some light coffee, and roasted malts. This is a very smooth imperial stout. It doesnít try to kill your face with extreme bitterness or excessive maltiness/sugar. The chocolate and honey work well together. It felt quite nice to drink.

Black with a thick tan head. Char, wood, earthy, smoke aroma. Smokey, chocolate, char taste. Good beer

Pours a deep brown mahogany with just a hint of orange-red, an attractive, tight tan head dissipates quickly with tiny bubbles flying. Aroma is roast coffee, smoke, a hint of chocolate and an edge of something different. Taste follows suit, plus peppery nuts and burnt wood. Bitches Brew mixes imperial stout with Tej, the Ethiopian mead. That provides a lighter but very silky body compared to the average. Ethiopia is one of those fortunate places where hops donít grow, so gesho is the bittering edge. It provides a pronounced edge but without the weasel p*ss flavor so beloved of "hop forward" brewers. This beer was still evolving in the glass and bottle. It was only about four months old, and I suspect Bitches Brew gets more interesting with age. I look forward to trying it again, a little father down the road. The score might go up. And as a side note, I really have to commend the beer nerds at Dogfish Head for their consistent inventiveness. Not every project is a home run, but Bitches Brew is at least a double that might be stretched to a triple. "Big bold" is usually a red flag for American brews, but they manage to intrigue your palate, not wreck it.

On draft poured into a tulip glass..black with a fluffy tan head..aroma of coffee,chocolate,roasted nuts,dark fruits,licorice..dry,malty and really smooth..very good.

Clunky black pour with heavy brown head. Nosr of deep roasted malt, coffee, and chocolate. Flavor is smooth, smooth roast, burnt marshmallow, bitter chocolate and faint honey. Juicy vegetal bitterness from the gesho hanging in the background. Probably the best DFH brew Iíve had.

Dark black pour with a very big head. Lots of carbonation. Sweet honey aroma. Light mouthfeel. Fairly light in flavor. Fairly bitter with a hint of molasses. Easy drinking.

Dark flavor. Rich bitter and gritty almost. Heavy hitting. Dark foaming head. Need to accompany with food in order for taste to be accurate. Even crackers.
