COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In honor of the 40th anniversary of the original release of Bitches Brew, Miles Davisí 1970 paradigm-shifting landmark fusion breakthrough, weíve created our own Bitches Brew - a bold, dark beer thatís a fusion of three threads imperial stout and one thread honey beer with gesho root, a gustatory analog to Milesí masterpiece.Featuring the albumís iconic artwork, created by the late Mati Klarwein, on its label, Dogfish Headís Bitches Brew will be unveiled at SAVOR, An American Craft Beer & Food Experience, June 5, National Building Museum, Washington DC. Havenít experienced the Bitches Brew album? Two 40th anniversary editions of Miles Davisí Bitches Brew -- a Legacy Edition and a deluxe Collectorís Edition -- will be available Tuesday, August 31. The newly created ale is designed, according to Dogfish founder and president Sam Calagione, "as the ultimate partner for chili or spicy curry chicken" and best enjoyed "sipped cool, not cold, from a snifter or red wine glass while listening to the Bitches Brew album." Calagione was drawn to the alchemical spirits in Bitches Brew right out of college, acquiring a copy of the album "within months of the first time I brewed a batch of homebrew in my apartment in New York City. I listened to it when I was writing my Dogfish business plan. I wanted Dogfish Head to be a maniacally inventive and creative brewery, analog beer for the digital age. You could say that my dream was to have Dogfish Head, in some small way, stand for the same thing in the beer world that Bitches Brew stands for in the jazz world. You can imagine how excited we are to be doing this project 17 years after I wrote that business plan." "Thereís a spirit of innovation, of creativity and individuality, thats at the core of Milesí music," said Adam Block, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Legacy Recordings. "Sam and Dogfish Head approach their art from the same place and consequently the marriage is an easy and cool one." Dogfish Head and its "off-centered ales for off-centered people" were the subject of "A Better Brew," an article in The New Yorker (Nov. 24, 2008) examining the rise of extreme beer. "Beer has lagged well behind wine and organic produce in the ongoing reinvention of American cuisine. Yet the change over the past twenty years has been startling," wrote Burkhard Bilger. "Dogfish is something of a mascot for this unruly movement. In the thirteen years since Calagione founded the brewery, it has gone from being the smallest in the country to the thirty-eighth largest. Calagione makes more beer with at least ten per cent alcohol than any other brewer, and his odd ingredients are often drawn from ancient or obscure beer traditions. It is to Budweiser what a bouillabaisse is to fish stock."

Pours pitch black with a very thin ring of chocolatey, mocha head. Very sticky lacing. Aroma is very roasty and chocolatey. A great vanilla undertone mixed with some dark fruits, a lot of raisin. Mouth has a chocolate and coffee. Very creamy. Almost like chocolate/coffee milk. Once again, a lot of roast and dark fruits. Smooth, with a slight bitter finish.

Thanks DuffMan for this one. Drank while listening to the album of the same name, which is better than the beer though the beer is still quite good. Cocoa and roasted elements as well as a bit of fruity malt vinous lactose and so on. Taste is sweet. Overall a decent stout but not mind-blowing like the album.

5/3/13@ TGL. 3/23/14 at home after sitting on it for a few months. Tried to drink it while listening to Bitches Brew by Miles Davis. The beer was wonderful. The music unlistenable. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Delicious! But not to be drank after 4 pints of Anti-Hero. Has a grainy chocolatey texture. ---Rated via Beer Buddy

Pours dark, mild lace with a white/purple head. Has a fruity aroma almost like a wine. Dark full bodied finish that doesn't linger too long like some imperial stouts. Def would try it again. 8/10. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours black. Medium tan head. First thing I smell is espresso, followed by some vegetable notes. Flavor is chalky. Lots going on here. Dark fruits. Treacle. Sweet finish. The alcohol shows as it warms. A touch to sweet for my liking.

750ml bottle into a Trappist glass; served cool. Aroma: Lots of milk chocolate. Thereís a bit of bitter herb, kind of like in DFís Theobroma; I assume itís the gesho. Appearance: Jet black, completely opaque body, with a thin, dark brown cap. A little bit of lacing. Taste: A bitter, almost grape kind of herb flavor; again probably the gesho. Lots of roasty malt. Just some smooth bitterness all around. Palate: Medium+ body with a moderate-high amount of carbonation. Moderately long finish that ends on bitter earthiness. Overall: Quite tasty. Intriguing, unique flavors.

Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer and Beyond shop. Thanks DSG. Black with dark tan head. Deep chocolate and some earth aroma, wet earth, bitter and roasty taste. Full-bodied, smooth texture, some roaster potato and a little dry finish. Really tasty.

Bottle. Pours dark, but thin enough at the edges to allow light to seep through. Tan head, no lacing. Aroma is coffee. Flavor is coffee, roasted malt, vanilla, and that slight, sharp fruitiness just at the end. The high carbonation and dry mouthfeel go along with the sharp fruit finish-- probably the most interesting aspect of this beer. Not really worth the price of entry, but Iíve wanted to try it, and it IS a decent offering from DFH.
