Commercial Description:
Black & Blue is golden Belgian Ale made with over 300 lbs of fresh blackberries and blueberries. With a deep purple full body and a long-lasting lacy pink head, this ale is both attractive and delicious! It is tart and fruity, like our brewers! The subtle bitterness of Hallertau and Saaz hops shines through the fruit forward flavor and sets the palate aglow. (30 IBUs). This tasty brew has smooth but noticeable alcohol warmth. Belgian yeast gives this brew a characteristically dry spicy finish. The beautiful interplay of fruit, spice, and alcohol is complimented by a soft malt profile, and a high level of carbonation.

Bottle from Sammy, thanks! Bottled 2/07. Pinkish amber color. Berries, melon and toffee in the aroma. Alcoholic flavor with butter, toffee, red and black berries and raspberry. Should be quite drinkable, but the balanced is bothered by the abundance of alcohol.

15th June 2008. The fruit is very light and in the background. Very crisp palate and a dry finish. Was expecting something much richer but very good nontheless.

Yet another fine Dogfish Head brew. Poured out into the glass, it produced a nice golden hue with a little red to it. It was translucent and it had little to no head. Being a fruit beer, what I tell you it smelled like is pretty redundant. It smelled like fruit. Duh. It had a very nice clear scent with just bits of hops but it was mostly sweet and smelled like blue and blackberries. Tasting it, I got a nice hit of blueberries. It was a very sweet brew with little to no taste from the alcohol (which is surprising being at almost 8%). There is a little bit of barley at the end to remind you that it is, in fact, brew. The texture was very very smooth. It had a nice gather of carbonation and air to start, flowing nicely into a palate of flavors and it finished off with a handful of hops.

Poured a clear reddish amber with a vanishing head. Sweet berry aroma with a similar tart flavor. Light body. It’s not bad, just not my thing.

750 ml. bottle. Shared with Gabe. Pours a thin head, over a slightly cloudy, reddish amber (SRM 10-12).....nose is slight fruit (blueberry, blackberry), bit of funk, some light spice....taste is light fruits, bit of Belgian funk (almost Brett like), finishing with hop bitterness, dry throughout....mouth feel is light, carbonation medium high. This is a very interesting beer. The fruit flavors are very lightly done and are quite delicious. There is bit of Belgian funk which adds tang and character. The alcohol is well hidden.

Part of a backlog. Bottle. Pours a dark but clear cherry, almost purple. Nose is strongly of blueberries and the flavor does not disappoint. Finish is rather dry and spiced with what I think is cloves.

(Bottled one which I shared with two Swedes at Ginger Man, NYC) Poured with amber colour and hazy. Head was white and small. Blueberries dominated the aroma which had also fruity notes. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Taste included malts, blueberry, raspberry, fruitiness, bittereness and Belgian type of yeastiness. Aftertaste was mostly of berries. I liked.
