Commercial Description:
Black & Blue is golden Belgian Ale made with over 300 lbs of fresh blackberries and blueberries. With a deep purple full body and a long-lasting lacy pink head, this ale is both attractive and delicious! It is tart and fruity, like our brewers! The subtle bitterness of Hallertau and Saaz hops shines through the fruit forward flavor and sets the palate aglow. (30 IBUs). This tasty brew has smooth but noticeable alcohol warmth. Belgian yeast gives this brew a characteristically dry spicy finish. The beautiful interplay of fruit, spice, and alcohol is complimented by a soft malt profile, and a high level of carbonation.

Bottle poured to glass. Thanks Bryan K. Pours a redish color with a white head. Sweet malty profile and very high carbonation on the tounge. Blue and blackberrys are heavy in the nose.

From bottle. Light carbonic metallic gassy character to the nose, with light sweet fruit and some dull papery hops. Light malt presense and not a lot of fruity aroma. Dark copper-amber clear with thin lacing head. Medium-heavy watery body with medium carbonation. Light warming. Starts sweet with mild malt caramel and some brown sugar. Fruity character comes in, but it’s not easy to distinguish any specific fruit here. Berry-like tartness, for sure, but not overwhelming. There is some oxidation in here, and the higher alcohol taste is mixed with some papery hops and bit of fruit funk. Not a horrible beer by any stretch, but I was expecting something a bit more grandiose and with a bit of oomph. Tasty, but nothing special.

Bottle. Moderate malt note of grain, grass for the hops, light earth for the yeast, with strong smells of grape, wine, berry and a hint of vinegar. Head is large, fizzy, white with good lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is sparkling clear light burgundy. Flavor is lightly sweet and moderately acidic to start, then finishes lightly sweet and acidic and moderately bitter. Palate is medium, oily and has a lively to fizzy carbonation. Although not my idea of "beer" it did have some interesting and pleasant qualities.

I liked the idea behind this, but it is too muddied up .Slight hints of fruit, but not clean or precise. Dissappointing.

Maybe I don’t "get it", but this struck me as a chemistry experiment gone bad. Some fruity notes greet you upon opening. It was downhill from there. Cloying is used in many of the reviews, and I tend to agree, only not in a good way. Smith Brothers would have rejected this concept as the flavors just don’t meld together and compete with the high ABV. Couldn’t finish it, but it gets points for trying.

Pours an amber color with a slightly colorful tint. Aroma is full of vanilla with some graham cracker and lots of berries. Flavor is almost like desert. Lots of berries and vanilla.
