Commercial Description:
Black & Blue is golden Belgian Ale made with over 300 lbs of fresh blackberries and blueberries. With a deep purple full body and a long-lasting lacy pink head, this ale is both attractive and delicious! It is tart and fruity, like our brewers! The subtle bitterness of Hallertau and Saaz hops shines through the fruit forward flavor and sets the palate aglow. (30 IBUs). This tasty brew has smooth but noticeable alcohol warmth. Belgian yeast gives this brew a characteristically dry spicy finish. The beautiful interplay of fruit, spice, and alcohol is complimented by a soft malt profile, and a high level of carbonation.

Thanks to GMCC2181 and BigErn for these bottles. Clean reddish pour with small off white head. Berry nose with some sweetness as well. Flavor is mild berry with a nice soft sourness that I enjoyed. Thanks Gabe and Sean!

Bottle. Pours cloudy amber with two finger frothy off white head. Fruity nose as described. Taste is sweet on the front end but some spice on the back end. Kind of a muddled flavor. I concur with the earlier review that said this drinks more like wine than beer.

[bottle] Blueberry and raspberry aroma (not much surprise there) together with just a touch of corriandery hops--hard to tell if it will be sweet or sour. Hazy blood orage with only wispy white on top. Spicy and sour flavour with not crazy fruitiness that blends very well with the alcohol and medium carbonation. Lots of flavours but not much to put a finger on. Salty and warm feel with a subtle bitterness that is adequatefor the dry belgian spiciness. Spicy finish.

Bottled Feb. ’07. Pours clear red with an off white head. Fruity/berry aroma, more blackberry than blueberry. Smooth in the mouth with a rather light flavor. It’s not overly sweet, and again, more blackberry. Not bad.

Good brew, drinks almost like wine IMO. Very fruity and sugary on the nose, with a nice hint of malt. Taste is very fruity, full of dark berries as the label suggests. Tart finish. Would drink again, but probably wouldn’t seek out.

750 ml bottle from Chuck’s Liquor in Bowling Green. Poured a clear mahogany color with a small whitish head...approximately one finger. Aroma was very complex. Sweet malt combined with various over ripe fruits. Flavor was solid with some fruit flavor and a malty balance. Mouthfeel was creamy. Alcohol was well masked. Very good beer, though not as good as the Red & White.

750ml bottle from By the Bottle in Vancouver, WA--Poured a deep amber body with a small off-white head. Interesting complexity in this beer. Malty and fruity with some bright piquant notes. Very well masked alcohol. Nice hop presence. Still missing something here. But not bad.

This was a confusing beer for me (bottle at Papago). I was promised black&blueberries, but got a syrupy quad. Really fell flat for me. I was expecting great things after my Red & White encounter in Boston, but I detected very little fruit (what I did find was more like funky dates than berries).
