Commercial Description:
Black & Blue is golden Belgian Ale made with over 300 lbs of fresh blackberries and blueberries. With a deep purple full body and a long-lasting lacy pink head, this ale is both attractive and delicious! It is tart and fruity, like our brewers! The subtle bitterness of Hallertau and Saaz hops shines through the fruit forward flavor and sets the palate aglow. (30 IBUs). This tasty brew has smooth but noticeable alcohol warmth. Belgian yeast gives this brew a characteristically dry spicy finish. The beautiful interplay of fruit, spice, and alcohol is complimented by a soft malt profile, and a high level of carbonation.

750 ml bottle poured a clear reddish amber with a lasting creamy ivory head. Aromas of blueberry, light blackberry and cookie. Palate was medium bodied crisp and tart. Flavors of blueberry, blackberry and carmel with a crisp dry bitter finish.

750ml bottle. Pours a glowing deep orange. Not as strong a fruit flavor as I was expecting but pretty good.

On tap @ Hopleaf. Aww crap its a fruit beer. Didn’t expect it too be extra fruity! A nice brew but nothing tremendous. Medium body - a bit more substance than most fruit beers. Not an overwhemling presence of black and blueberries but the aroma and tartness are definately there. A nice hoppy finish which is uncharacteristic of many fruit beers. Interesting but I will not be having this again!

Nice deep hazy golden coloured body with a very thin white head. Aroma of fruits, malt, yeast and a bit of hops - not much. Medium-bodied; Strong fruity flavour of blackberries and raspberries, along with a fake candy sugar and yeastie taste. Aftertaste shows way more sugars, a bit of fruit and mostly a carbonated malty and alcohol kick. Overall, a decent beer - but nothing special at all. I sampled this 750 mL bottle purchased from Norm’s in Vienna, Virginia on 19-April-2008.

Pours a dark hazy amber color with a fizzy pinkish head that goes quickly. Spicy sweet aroma of yeast and dark fruits. Flavor is less appealling. The hops and alcohol dont play so well with the fruit. It seems like both sides are trying to overpower each other. Too highly carbonated. Interesting, but not great.

on tap @ papago. hazy amber color with a pink shade to it and a thin off white head which quickly fades to a ring. it smells very fresh somehow... aromas of belgian yeast, banana like fruitiness, wheat, sweet grain and a light tartness. the flavor is mostly sweet, yeasty and alcoholic. there are notes of caramel, something spicy and a lightly tart dry blackberry like finish. medium body with lots of energetic carbonation.

Bottle: Poured a very nice semi dark brown color with a thin off white head that kinda sticks around. Sugar and hops are predominant in the scent. Taste is of unripened (tart) fruit and a hint of alcohol.

Bottle. Very clear rose’ wine color; almost pink with a fleeting head. Spicy sweet yeasty smell with berry fruits. Sweet berry, spicy yeast flavors with hints of burnt rubber tannins.... Basically a mess of a high alcohol fruit beer here, it didn’t work for me.
