Commercial Description:
Black & Blue is golden Belgian Ale made with over 300 lbs of fresh blackberries and blueberries. With a deep purple full body and a long-lasting lacy pink head, this ale is both attractive and delicious! It is tart and fruity, like our brewers! The subtle bitterness of Hallertau and Saaz hops shines through the fruit forward flavor and sets the palate aglow. (30 IBUs). This tasty brew has smooth but noticeable alcohol warmth. Belgian yeast gives this brew a characteristically dry spicy finish. The beautiful interplay of fruit, spice, and alcohol is complimented by a soft malt profile, and a high level of carbonation.

Bottle at Magic dave6’s disco dance tasting. Cloudy orange with a thin white head. Nose is bramble and hay, creamy though. Slight dishwater tones about it. Mouth is creamy, some brambles, some fizz, lots of cream. No finish, slight lasting creaminess, cloying. Alright

Tasting, courtesy of Fordest’s event. Beer#14. hazy copper-red color with a thin white head. Fruity aroma with mixed berries and some barnyard funk. Flavor was sweet and sour fruits (but i could not specifically taste any blueberries or blackberries). The mouthfeel was smooth and malty. The finish was dry and kinda sour. overall: After the Cantillion blabar a high bar has been set for all other blueberry concoctions; and this beer, while quite good, suffers by the recent comparison. Rerate note: Received a bottle from Secret Santa (Sprinkle). My first sample was from a two ounce rating, and I’m surprised to see that my comments do not drastically change now that I have a full bottle at my disposal. However I’m increasing my rating by a tenth as I find that I throughly enjoy this concoction..

Tasted at Fordest’s alternative tasting. Amber color. Small head. Sweetish. Hard to distinguish berry flavors. Some floaties. Malty. Nice.

Cloudy mahogany in snifter; smells of sweet fruit and alcohol; tastes sweet, tart, heavy fruit essence with slightly medicinal aftertaste; good for after dinner w/ fruit/cheese; would not stand alone well in my opinion

750 ml. Bottled on 02/12/07. Pours out a beautiful purple and crimson color with a thin white head. Aroma of blueberries and fruity Belgian yeast. Flavor is ever so slightly tart, but has mellowed considerably after a year in the bottle. Heavy carbonation is noticeable as are hints of blackberry. Would characterize this beer as being predominately sweet and a little thin. Finish is is spicy and long lasting. It has improved with age, as most of the stronger Dogfish beers do, but still not as complex as I’d hoped.

Pours a ruby/copper color. A little hazy with a nice, creamy white head. Aroma is of berries and yeast. Deliciously fruity taste, blueberries and blackberries for sure along with a floral yeasty taste. Very creamy with sweet malts and spices. Crisp finish.
