Commercial Description:
Black & Blue is golden Belgian Ale made with over 300 lbs of fresh blackberries and blueberries. With a deep purple full body and a long-lasting lacy pink head, this ale is both attractive and delicious! It is tart and fruity, like our brewers! The subtle bitterness of Hallertau and Saaz hops shines through the fruit forward flavor and sets the palate aglow. (30 IBUs). This tasty brew has smooth but noticeable alcohol warmth. Belgian yeast gives this brew a characteristically dry spicy finish. The beautiful interplay of fruit, spice, and alcohol is complimented by a soft malt profile, and a high level of carbonation.

(From bottle @ DFH event in Boothbay, ME 8/23/07) Rich berry taste but a little hot...Amber with light blue and purplish tints. Rich aroma of berries and malt. Mouthfeel fairly smooth, lightly sticky. Light rings of fine lacing. Tastes of fairly rich malt and berries, but alcohol not very well-hidden.

There are certainly blueberries and raspberries in this beer. Unfortunately, the light aroma and muddled tastes overpowered by the alcohol don’t deliver for me. Average fizzy off-white head, clear copper body. Nose is malty with a light touch of hops. The flavor is earth topped with berries and the two flavors don’t jibe. Moderately sweet and lightly bitter. Medium body with a thin texture and soft carbonation. Tangy finish, but also quite alcoholic.

Big ol’ bottle 2007....very pretty, the color of cranberry juice, a nice gathering of foam...its tan with pink highlights....very little aroma, some clove, yet hardly a berry here or there.....I will be aging this brew to see what it will do....alcohol is well disguised...thin body texture...I love you dogfish head, but I’m not feeling the usual love on this brew..:(

Brought to C-U Beer Club by htsprint. Deep copper color with fizzy off white head. Areoma was semi-sweet with notes of berries tempered by touches of alcohol and dough. Medium to full bodied with lively carbonation. Flavor was semi-sweet, berries without sugar added. Pleasant drink chilled on a hot summer day.

I picked this up at State Line in Elkton and feel ripped off for $12.99 as I paid less for more spectacular beers. The blackberries and blueberries seem to clash into a dry sour mix which lacks the sweetness I desire and melds with some off centered malts which I wish were toned down. I tried it at different temps and got the same effect. The nose has a nice hoppy floral quality in there but isn’t too exuberant. Flavor is too unbalanced.

Bottle courtesy of John adam2002: Poured a medium brown/reddish color ale with a medium foamy head with average retention and some lacing. Aroma of sweet grain is kind of weird. Taste is dominated by sweet malt with an unrefined grain taste which didn’t really agree with my taste buds. Body is pretty average with some medium carbonation and no alcohol was discernable. I couldn’t really taste much fruit or hops in this beer contrary to what the label advertised. Overall, I thought this was not bad but it wasn’t even close to being as great as what the label lead me to expect.
