Commercial Description:
Black & Blue is golden Belgian Ale made with over 300 lbs of fresh blackberries and blueberries. With a deep purple full body and a long-lasting lacy pink head, this ale is both attractive and delicious! It is tart and fruity, like our brewers! The subtle bitterness of Hallertau and Saaz hops shines through the fruit forward flavor and sets the palate aglow. (30 IBUs). This tasty brew has smooth but noticeable alcohol warmth. Belgian yeast gives this brew a characteristically dry spicy finish. The beautiful interplay of fruit, spice, and alcohol is complimented by a soft malt profile, and a high level of carbonation.

750 ml bottle. Poured a lovely reddish-purple berry color. Head was thick, foamy, and white with a pinkish tint. Head retention was good, but there was only a bit of lace left behind. Aroma was of subdued berries. The beer was neither sweet nor dry. The golden mean between them I guess. Flavor was malt dominated, mostly milk chocolatey with a hint of toffee accompanied by a nondescript berry accent. Although subtle, the berries were there; lightly acidic up front and peaking in intensity toward the end as the malt flavors waned. The alcohol was tangible and reminded me of vodka, especially when you chewed the beer a bit before swallowing. Interesting beer overall, but not as good as I had hoped it would be.

poured into tall tulip... pours like pink champagne that sticks to the glass. pours a full frothy white head, with a sweet winey aroma, not as afronted as the descriptin may suit but mild, sweet, winey feel.. pretty fun to drink

750ml bottle: I had this one for several months sitting in Mom’s refrigerator. The 10% ABV kind of scared me. Poured a pleasant looking reddish amber with just a wisp of an off white head. Caramel, malt, and sugar aroma with just a touch of the fruit. Flavor is quite full with fruits and caramel. It is sweet too. Can’t drink too much of this stuff. Special occasions? Sure. Nice beer but perhaps unrefined.

Pours a deep amber / nearly crimson body and a bountiful ivory / lightly tinted pink cap of head. The aroma is sweet with, Belgian sugars and caramel malts. Very fruity in all aspects, red apple, plum, papaya, cherries, but most subdued are the black raspberries and blueberries. Although distinctly in attendance, one does have to search a bit for the Black & Blue portion. I pick up on a very Belgian character to this beer… the yeast and the sugars I suppose? The palate is sticky and sometimes cloyingly sweet, which takes away from the overall drink-ability… so I’ll stick to making this only a special occasion beer.

This dark maroonish-amber beer poured 3cm of pinkish head with sustained lacing. Nose is dark fruits and slight malt. Tastes are malts, dark fuit, and subtle acidic alcohol with metal finishing up the palate. Medium/full body and medium carbonation. Fairly easy and pleasant to drink.

Bottle. Pours a clear copper color with a reddish beige head. The aroma is mainly light berries and a little malt. The first sensation is of sweet malts with the berries coming in a little later. Medium to light mouthfeel. Goes down smoothly and the ABV is well hidden.

Not a lot of fruit here. I’m mainly picking up caramel. Very good looking ale, a deep amber highlighted in red with a short-lived eggshell head that produces some slippery lacing. Wait a sec - I’m picking up some berries in the finish. I’d call it a "Beligian Strong Ale." Okay, but I won’t be repeating it... unless treated.
