Commercial Description:
Black & Blue is golden Belgian Ale made with over 300 lbs of fresh blackberries and blueberries. With a deep purple full body and a long-lasting lacy pink head, this ale is both attractive and delicious! It is tart and fruity, like our brewers! The subtle bitterness of Hallertau and Saaz hops shines through the fruit forward flavor and sets the palate aglow. (30 IBUs). This tasty brew has smooth but noticeable alcohol warmth. Belgian yeast gives this brew a characteristically dry spicy finish. The beautiful interplay of fruit, spice, and alcohol is complimented by a soft malt profile, and a high level of carbonation.

Bottle. Pours a clear amber color with an off-white head. Sweet malty and fruity blueberry aroma. Sweet malty fruity flavor with some hints of blueberry. Long fruity finish with some sour hints and a bitter aftertaste.

First off, putting Donald Sutherland on the label is pure genius. The form fitting jacket is a little much though. The beer itself is interesting. It pours with little head and a fruity champagne aroma. I don’t know how this qualifies as beer, but I guess it does. However, it is the uniqueness that gets my attention. Given the ingredients, I would expect it to be much sweeter. I was pleasantly surprised how balanced out it was. The flavor was a little more carbonated than I expected. The aftertaste was pleasant as well. I thought this beer was quite good. I wouldn’t drink it every night, but it wouldn’t disappoint me either.

Light ruby umber color with a smallish off-white head with a hint of pink. Fruitiness in aroma of a malt liquor. Some corn and white grapes as well. Light caramel and biscuit in the front with a light berry topping in the middle. No real berry flavor stands out just a simple juice. ALcohol seems to waddle about quite a bit in this one. Some spiciness that I attribute to the alcohol in the finish. A thick linger with a mouthcoating sweetness, more like dextrose. A touch more refined than your average malt liquor, still simple, strong and far from a suggilate brew.

(750ml bottle, bottled 2/12/07) Large beige head atop crystal clear red/amber body. Aroma is moderately sweet, blueberry/boysenberry, some blackberry. Taste is sweet, very berry, some alcohol, light peach, earthy/spicy. Medium-full body, moderately sticky. Not surprisingly, too big and too sweet for a single person to drink the bottle it’s sold in during an evening.

It poured a clear, reddish-brown with a big off-white head with a pale reddish tinge. It was light bodied, the berry flavor was blended into the brew they have avoided the sense of a fruit additive taste. It was sweet with a bit of a sour aftertaste, sour not a hop bitterness. the hops were not detectable. Pleasant, refreshing. Like a Belgian the high ABV was disguised, like a Belgian it left me with a gassy feeling.

Bottle. I’m beginning to expect the worst from DFH. I find their brews (other than WWS) less than spectacular w/ more hype than flavor. This brew is actually pretty good though. Pour is a ruby red. Really drinkable w/ a light, slightly fruity/caramel flavor.
