COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black & Blue is golden Belgian Ale made with over 300 lbs of fresh blackberries and blueberries. With a deep purple full body and a long-lasting lacy pink head, this ale is both attractive and delicious! It is tart and fruity, like our brewers! The subtle bitterness of Hallertau and Saaz hops shines through the fruit forward flavor and sets the palate aglow. (30 IBUs). This tasty brew has smooth but noticeable alcohol warmth. Belgian yeast gives this brew a characteristically dry spicy finish. The beautiful interplay of fruit, spice, and alcohol is complimented by a soft malt profile, and a high level of carbonation.

Bottle. Tasting at Dilly Deil in Mariemont. A nice brew but nothing tremendous. Medium body - a bit more substance than most fruit beers. Not an overwhemling presence of black and blueberries but the aroma and tartness are definately there. A nice hoppy finish which is uncharacteristic of many fruit beers - Dogfish’s take on this type I suppose. An interesting beer that was tasty but certainy not worth the price @ $10.99 for a big bottle.

Pour was red-hued, somewhat amber like base. The head was big bubbled frothy upon pouring, yet it settled to a thin covering, off-white in color, solid retention as a thin covering. Lacing was near nil. The aroma was berry-like, blueberry pie. Flavor was black and blueberries both, hopefully not just cuz that’s what the label said. Unfortunately, this thing took on a blueberry pie (definitely some spicing underneath, cinnamon?) and puree type flavor, a little phoney, yet not over the top in fruitiness. Almost came across like the base beer behind the DFH punkin’ ale, but with berries instead. Interesting, but not great. Finest point may be the hiding of the 10%ABV, couldn’t believe it. Slightly acidic mouthfeel, light body.

Bottle shared at DLD. Thanks to whoever bought this b/c I didn’t want to have to buy a whole bottle. Pours a clear amber purple with a fruity nose mostly blueberries and evidently that’s blackberries too. Fruity flavors that black and blue with carmel, pepper, and not much else. The carbonation is really prickly on this. I like fruit beers, but i’m not too into this one.

Pours out an interesting reddish/purple shade with slight thin head. Aroma is of fruit with slight yeast. Blueberry and blackberry are in the background the whole time, with some spice, yeast and slight alcohol and bitterness on the finish. Interesting combination of flavors.

Pours a light reddish purple with a white head. The aroma has blackberry and blueberry and little else. Flavor is mild and largely made up of the aforementioned fruits along with a slight spice touch.

750mL bottle. Bottled on: 02/13/07. Pours a clear amber with a thick quartz head. Some hints of raspberries and blueberries in the lightly grainy aroma. Solidly smooth-bodied with some crispness at the end. Malty sweetness and the tanginess of the yeast and berries start things off. Finishes a tad musty with just a little pepper and the slightest touch of warming alcohol. Just a little drying. Subtle all the way through. Tastes pretty much like I expected it to.

This is what these guys do best. They give you such subtle flavors that it makes the flavor even more pronounced. Nothing is ever topo sweet or shy. It is always right out there. This beer has the black and blueberries that show perfectly!
