COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black & Blue is golden Belgian Ale made with over 300 lbs of fresh blackberries and blueberries. With a deep purple full body and a long-lasting lacy pink head, this ale is both attractive and delicious! It is tart and fruity, like our brewers! The subtle bitterness of Hallertau and Saaz hops shines through the fruit forward flavor and sets the palate aglow. (30 IBUs). This tasty brew has smooth but noticeable alcohol warmth. Belgian yeast gives this brew a characteristically dry spicy finish. The beautiful interplay of fruit, spice, and alcohol is complimented by a soft malt profile, and a high level of carbonation.

750 ml bottle. Bottled on 2/13/07. Poured out a clear, bright garnet color. Minimal head. Aromas are of berries, slight Belgian funk, dry straw, some malts, damp basement. Flavors are of malts mostly, with a hint of berries & earthy hops rounding out the flavors. medium mouthfeel, decent body. Good beer, but needs more fruit.

Thanks to Badgerben for sharing. Nice red orange color with lots of foamy white head. Smells a lot like a berry potpourri my mother used to have when I was younger Thick fizzy mouth feel with faint blueberry taste.

Shared by someone at DLD. Not much at all in the ways of an aroma, only a light berry. A slight reddish color. Flavor was nothing special either but not offensive.

tawny copper color, amber at edges. pinkish white tall thick foamy head. aroma is malty sweet and a little raisiny like a BSA, maybe some faint dried berry skins too. flavor starts out watery surprisingly, then a strong dry malt flavor kicks in and is a bit ginny. berry flaors come up late, but dry not sweet. lively carbonation. very dry and bitter malt finish. dry vermouth aftertaste. another overpriced experiment.

Bottle. High creamy off-white lasting head. Clear and wonderful red brown body. Herbal barley malt aroma. Sweet flavor of plus raisins berries and carramel. Suitable amount of carbonation.

(Bottle 75 cl) Pours a clear, reddish amber with a small, off-white head. Sweetish, berry like notes in the aroma. Fairly full-bodied dominated by the sweet berry notes that lead to a warming, alcoholic finish. Quite delicate. 120507

A Mes rate: Bottle @ Københavnske Øldage. Nice colour, red copper golden amber, yup it’s all of those. Fruity, hoppy aroma with some vegetation too, cabbage? Rather sugary and bland in the mouth. Too sweet.

Reddish amber with a smallish head that rapidly diminshes, no lacing. Aroma is very fruity (real fruit) with notes of caramel and Belgian yeast. Flavor brings this with a medium body and a sweet finish. 10% ABV? Wouldn’t have guessed that high unless I knew it was DFH. Overall enjoyable but not that interesting despite all the stuff going on. It’s like the opposite of R + W.

So I gave in to another over priced gimmick beer from DFH - so sue me! - red/amber pour with a purple-ish tint - minimal head - sweet, malty aroma, with very apparent raspberries and blueberries (quite inviting actually) wrapping around the malt base, making the aroma remind me of fruit-filled pastries or blueberry muffins - quite light, semi-tart, and crisp, lacking the boozy sweetness I was bracing myself for (as is so often the case with these high gravity DFH brews) - soft carbonation - the berry flavors are quite earthy and natural, and they combine pretty well with the light spiciness imparted by the yeast - some touches of wilflowers (lavender mostly) arrive late - the alcohol comes through in the finish a bit, giving the beer some unwelcome warmth considering that it is nice and airy up until that point - as with the red and white, they should have made the abv lower, but up until the alcohol burn in the finish, this is one of the more enjoyable DFH brews I’ve had in quite some time.

Bottled. An amber beer with a thick beige head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of alcohol and malt - quite simple. The flavor is sweet malty again with strong notes of alcohol, and some light berry notes. Too strong on the alcohol and too simple - for me.
