Black & Blue is golden Belgian Ale made with over 300 lbs of fresh blackberries and blueberries. With a deep purple full body and a long-lasting lacy pink head, this ale is both attractive and delicious! It is tart and fruity, like our brewers! The subtle bitterness of Hallertau and Saaz hops shines through the fruit forward flavor and sets the palate aglow. (30 IBUs). This tasty brew has smooth but noticeable alcohol warmth. Belgian yeast gives this brew a characteristically dry spicy finish. The beautiful interplay of fruit, spice, and alcohol is complimented by a soft malt profile, and a high level of carbonation.

750ml bottle from Florian’s. Translucent ruby-red body with a quarter inch of off-white head. Smell is weaker than expected, but consists mostly of blackberry with a hint of blueberry. Blue and black berries dominate the flavor as expected, with hints of caramel malt, making for a mostly sweet beer with a hint of sourness. Surprsisingly little alcohol present in the flavor. And while the body is atad syruppy, it;s oddly drinkable for such a big beer. Maybe getting this one again.

Clear copper amber body with a medium creamy off-white head that diminishes quickly into a light film. Sweet fruity aroma with some caramel and spice. Light berry flavor in the foreground, slightly tart blending into a caramel and sugary background.

rosey brown appearance with a sweet nose. flavor is very sweet with a strong berry character. little complexity and the sweetness is overbearing. at least they didn’t overload it with hops like all their other beers. an intersting idea, but it doesn’t really work

pours a amber with a violet hue, nice pinkish head. looks are very cool. not a whole lot going on in aroma, just a bit of malt and hint of berry. mouthful is nice and tart. has a dry finish with more tartness. no big berry flavors, just the tartness that almost ripe black berries have. it is very pleasant but not the complexity i was hoping for...

Very little aroma. Light berry, some vinuous notes. Totally transprent in the glass, very reddish in color. The fruit is muted on the palate, a point in favor in my book. Some spice shows through on the medium-length finish. Dry, but medium in every other way on palate. The least fruit presence you’ll ever find in a fruit beer, I think.

As far as dogfish head beers go this one is not the best. I did not think that the fruit or spice came out as much as the other beers by them. Still not a bad beer, just not as good as other dogfish head offerings.

Pours a grape juice red with a small white head. Has a large sweet and alcohol flavor in the begining, then finishes with a perfect blue, and blackberry flavor.

UPDATED: JUN 15, 2007 750 ml bottle. Pours to a beautiful, bright, ruby red color, with a rocky, pink head that fades, and a good bit of carbonation. The nose on this beer is faint, with light aroma of pale malt, paired with faint fruity/berry aroma, and peppery alcohol. The palate is almost non existant, with liight flavors of pale and sweet malt, and faint hints of fruity/berry flavor. This beer finishes with more light malt and light berry flavors, then ends with some warming, alcohol heat that lingers. I’m a big fan of a well done fruit beer, especially one with black berry and blue berry. Black & Blue was very lacking as a fruit beer, and I found this beer to be a dissapointment in general. It was a dangerously drinkable high abv beer, but I found the malt, and fruit aromas and flavors, totally lacking in this beer. I was surprised how little character this beer actually had. At $13 a bottle, it is not a beer I would try again, and unless you are really interested in trying a new beer from DFH, I would not recommend buying this beer.
