Black & Blue is golden Belgian Ale made with over 300 lbs of fresh blackberries and blueberries. With a deep purple full body and a long-lasting lacy pink head, this ale is both attractive and delicious! It is tart and fruity, like our brewers! The subtle bitterness of Hallertau and Saaz hops shines through the fruit forward flavor and sets the palate aglow. (30 IBUs). This tasty brew has smooth but noticeable alcohol warmth. Belgian yeast gives this brew a characteristically dry spicy finish. The beautiful interplay of fruit, spice, and alcohol is complimented by a soft malt profile, and a high level of carbonation.

750ml Bottle: Aroma is lightly sweet and lightly tart though not bitter. Smells of berries, black and blue. Poured a deep orange color with a small pink head that diminished. No lacing. Clear. Sparkling. Flavor is moderately sweet and tart, though not bitter. Tastes of berries and yeast. "Belgian Ale made with over 300 lbs of fresh blackberries and blueberries" really describes the flavor well. I donít notice the bitterness they speak of in this beerís description. Nice alcohol warmth. Light to medium body. Average carbonation. Tart, kind of dry finish is lasting, as is the alcohol warmth. Overall, an enjoyable brew.

750ml bottle, dated 2/12/07. pours a beautiful clear deep red with small white head around the rim. nose is surprisingly more yeasty than fruity. that yeast smell is pretty offensive, like something rotten. other aroma notes are cinnamon, blueberries, and belgian candy sugar. flavor is more spicy than fruity, hints of coriander, cinnamon, and something i canít put my finger on. subtle blackberry notes as well. this beer also isnít very tart. finishes dry with subtle tart fruit notes. about the only thing it has going for it is appearance and well hidden alcohol. now that i drink more of it and pair with cheddar and crackers, and mushroom turnovers this becomes more enjoyable.

Bottle. Nose is yeasty, punctuated by the titular fruit. There is a unique quality in the pouring of this one, it seems to resemble a blush wine as it settles into the glass, but takes on a much darker hue afterward. Opens smooth on the palate, slightly sharp tartness which mellows out. The hops are definitely noticeable, but well-balanced. Some alcohol in the finish. Only vague notes of the featured fruits, mostly showing up in the form of a tart and mildly tannic background. Blueberries show up a bit in the aftertaste.

On tap @ Rehoboth Brewpub-Pours a deep ruby red/plum color w/a moderate off white head. Somewhat fruity aroma, but not overly so. Classic Belgian taste w/just a touch of fruit flavor, more plum & colinder than anything else. I would call this brew a Belgian, not a fruit beer. Has some sweetness & carbination, along w/ a dough/yeast flavor to it. Nice mouthfeel, decent finish-not overly long but spicy. KInd of a watered down version of the Red & White.
NOTE- Bartender commented that the berries are not as prevelent in this years batch as in the past, saying "I liked it better last year, you could taste the berries more".

Tap. Pours a dingy purple color with a decent head. Nose is light fruit. Flavor is dominated by the blue with the black pretty much absent. Dominating in that that is the only discernable fruit flavor. There was no hop prescence. Thin and watery this was a disappointment, albeit not offensive.

Courtesy mgumby10 and SoLan. Poured a clear copper color with darkish maroon tints. Aroma reminiscent of a Belgian white, with a yeasty sweetness and spice character up front. Slight berry aroma, but itís subtle. Thick palate, well-carbonated. Slightly sweet start, followed by some tartness, then a dry finish, aided by some more fruity sweetness. Hides the 10% well.

Bottle from Caponeís. Clear deep ruby pour, with light pinkish head that dissipates quickly. The aroma was very berry, black and blue, with some earthy yeasty hints, but the berries predominate. The mouthfeel was medium, not hot at all, with a solid blue and mostly blackberry flavor, approaching that of a fine merlot, but not quite as fruity. Really goes down smooth for the ABV.

Pours a very clear reddish amber with a medium off white head. Smells kind of spicy, some cinnamon, some dark berries, and various other spices. Taste is fairly similar to the smell. Not as much berry as I thought there would be, but you definitely get it a little bit. I got more cinnamon and spicyness than anything. Finish is relatively smooth and the alcohol is masked pretty well. Not bad.

UPDATED: APR 13, 2007 750 ml-Pours a cherry red with a small pink bubbly head-Complex yet hard to detect specific aroma. Taste of berries. Finally noticable. Much better in scent than aroma. Finishes quite good. Gets better as you drink it.

750 mL bottle. Clear red/copper with a large, just off-white (pink) head. Spare lacing. Aroma of banana-clove type yeast, caramel and lighter malt and berries. I probably wouldnít have guessed which kind of berries, but being that the label tells me, I can definitely imagine that I taste blackberries and blueberries. Although, the berries are a bit more subtle than I expected. I canít decide what makes the biggest taste impression; yeast, malts or fruit.
Alcohol is well covered. Tart, spicy finish.
