Black & Blue is golden Belgian Ale made with over 300 lbs of fresh blackberries and blueberries. With a deep purple full body and a long-lasting lacy pink head, this ale is both attractive and delicious! It is tart and fruity, like our brewers! The subtle bitterness of Hallertau and Saaz hops shines through the fruit forward flavor and sets the palate aglow. (30 IBUs). This tasty brew has smooth but noticeable alcohol warmth. Belgian yeast gives this brew a characteristically dry spicy finish. The beautiful interplay of fruit, spice, and alcohol is complimented by a soft malt profile, and a high level of carbonation.

Had to go through a few samples of this at the DFH booth (GABF 2006) before deciding upon a rating. Dark purple magenta...no head. Nose is full of dark fruits, berries, and the like. Initial taste is lightly sweet backed by an intense tartness. Thin bodied..vinous and winey with a mild flat carbonation...some alcohol in there too. Interesting it was...probably not a style I’d go back to much, but well worth the try.

GABF 2006. Came out almost like grape juice but maybe a bit darker. Nose is berries/fruits, tough I couldn’t pick out which berry, and to me has some wine-like notes. Taste is big fruit, some tartness due to the berries, more wine-like notes and soft alcohol. Body is light-medium with mild carbonation and minimal warmth. Ends with more fruit and some tartness. I really didn’t care much for this.

GABF 2006: Purplish type color. Very fruity berry aroma. Both sweet and tart. Flavor matched. I seemed to get a little chocolate note in it. I liked the red and white better.

Pours a deep pink with some violet highlight with pretty much no head, although there was a light carbonation. Aroma is wine-like, very tanniny and woody, with sharp astringent grape must, and some aceto character- lightly fruity- moslty blueberry but it is under-defined and doesnt stand out. Tart berry flavor- raspberries, blueberries, more wine, red grapeskin. Finishes tart and slightly acidic with more tannin astringency. I didnt like this one too much.

On tap at the Rehoboth brewpub. Thick, with a deep red/purple color, looking almost like a fruit smoothy. Flavor is tart with a bitter finish. Don’t really have anything to compare this to, but I did enjoy it.

Thanks to TomDecapolis for this... They don’t do growlers of this but this was a special circumstance were we could via the kind folks at Rehoboth. Appears a pinkish, purple toned, dense, muddy crimson with a small white head that quickly fizzles out. Tiny speckles of lacing are left around the glass. Smell is very vinous, with notes of over ripened blackberries, and sugary corn syrup. I would’ve thought this was simply a wine that hadn’t fermented all the way out and had simply gone awry somewhere. Taste is of the same winey, tart aromas that I struggle to accept. Mouthfeel is tart, wine-like, mostly sour, and sticking to the sides of the tongue. There just doesn’t seem to be any sort of balance in this brew. It’s like bad medicine mixed with a caramelized, concentrated wine mix. This is worse than the sacramental wine that we would taste when we were alter boys...blech!

UPDATED: AUG 9, 2007 Poured a murky red color with a thin, off red color that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of blackberries, some buttercream, berry skins, cherry, and light alcohol. Taste of sweet berry, light tartness from berry skins, a sweet caramel, maybe vanilla, and faint alcohol in the finish.

Sample from Growler via TomDecapolis thanks to egadjzis (thanks guys!). Poured a deeper reddish/purple color with a very small sized head. Aromas of black cherries, caramel and all around berries (cranberries, strawberries and more). Tastes of black berries and all around berries. Had a black cherry tartness in the finish. Light alcohol, that turned stronger as it warmed, in the finish.
