Commercial Description:
Black & Blue is golden Belgian Ale made with over 300 lbs of fresh blackberries and blueberries. With a deep purple full body and a long-lasting lacy pink head, this ale is both attractive and delicious! It is tart and fruity, like our brewers! The subtle bitterness of Hallertau and Saaz hops shines through the fruit forward flavor and sets the palate aglow. (30 IBUs). This tasty brew has smooth but noticeable alcohol warmth. Belgian yeast gives this brew a characteristically dry spicy finish. The beautiful interplay of fruit, spice, and alcohol is complimented by a soft malt profile, and a high level of carbonation.

Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing. Body is light red. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain, cookie), lightly yeasty (cobwebs), with light notes of alcohol and grape/berry jelly. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery/syrupy texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic. Ehh...another simplistic and overpriced novelty beer, methinks. Just nothing compelling here, and overly sweet-and-boozy. Difficult to drink. Kinda sad.

Bottled: Pours hazy and dark orange with a nice pale, pink head. Berry nose with yeast. Crisp, medium bodied and with a sweet /sour flavour. Slightly bitter finish. The 10 pct. isn’t present untill the end. I normally don’t drink fruit beer, but this one is an enjoyable brew.

Bottle. Pours a purple body with a light color head. Lots of blueberry and blackberries in the nose and flavor. Very very good. Some hop character and of course the etoh is kinda strong but i think it has its place as well. I really enjoyed this one.

Aroma is very berryish, with someone kind of soapy off yeast backing, taste is slightly sour blackberry, with a bitter drying finish, slightly astringent, alcohol only subtlely hinted at,with definite warming of the tummy. I’m drinking on a warm humid night where a perky tart fruit beer is hitting the spot, doesn’t leave that thickish afterfeel on the tongue,so its even refreshing in its own way. Enjoyable is certain circumstances

So I’m not quite sure why everyone is so harsh with this one. In the glass, this beer glows blood orange with golden highlights and a 1/2 inch peach foam that hangs on for a minute or two. Aroma is freshly picked black & blueberries (as one would hope). Noticeable sourness, belgian yeast, banana, clove, and spice are on the tongue. Thick enough to remember, not too thick for nightmares...interesting.
