Commercial Description:
Black & Blue is golden Belgian Ale made with over 300 lbs of fresh blackberries and blueberries. With a deep purple full body and a long-lasting lacy pink head, this ale is both attractive and delicious! It is tart and fruity, like our brewers! The subtle bitterness of Hallertau and Saaz hops shines through the fruit forward flavor and sets the palate aglow. (30 IBUs). This tasty brew has smooth but noticeable alcohol warmth. Belgian yeast gives this brew a characteristically dry spicy finish. The beautiful interplay of fruit, spice, and alcohol is complimented by a soft malt profile, and a high level of carbonation.

750ml bottle, dated 2/12/07. pours a beautiful clear deep red with small white head around the rim. nose is surprisingly more yeasty than fruity. that yeast smell is pretty offensive, like something rotten. other aroma notes are cinnamon, blueberries, and belgian candy sugar. flavor is more spicy than fruity, hints of coriander, cinnamon, and something i can’t put my finger on. subtle blackberry notes as well. this beer also isn’t very tart. finishes dry with subtle tart fruit notes. about the only thing it has going for it is appearance and well hidden alcohol. now that i drink more of it and pair with cheddar and crackers, and mushroom turnovers this becomes more enjoyable.

Bottle; Poured a ruby clear color with not much head. Aroma of fruit, a little artificial; and some sweetness and hops peppering. Flavor was tart, with a pretty good fruit flavor. Spice provided a peppery mouthfeel.

Date: 4/28/2007
Event: DarkLord Day 2007
Location: Three Floyds Brewing Co. Parking Lot
Serving: Sampled from 750 mL bottle.

Tasting Notes
Aroma: Light berry.
Appearance: Dark coppery color with a foamy peach head..
Flavor: Lightly sweet overall with some light malt and berry flavors on top.
Palate: Medium-light body; pretty smooth.
Overall: An interesting brew, but somewhat disappointing. Maybe I was expecting something more in the flavor from this extreme brewer for the price...

Amber with a ruby tint, compact head fades fairly quickly. Aroma is faint, a bit of caramel, undefined dark fruit, and a touch of alcohol. Flavor matches the nose almost precisely. Perhaps a touch more fruit, but this is definitely a beer with notes of dark fruit as opposed to the fruit smacking you in the face. Alcohol is present but moslty integrated. Dry finish. Decent, but I was expecting something more outrageous for some reason. Did not strike me as particularly Belgian in nature.

750 mL bottle purchased at World of Beer in Tampa, FL. Aroma is nice and aromatic with plenty of berry notes. I detect blueberries more than anything else. There is also a nice sweetness present with a lingering herbal and vinous nose. Nice. Transparent amber/orange body with a smallish, off-yellow head. Light lacing. Caramelly, fruity, chewy, lightly cloying sticky start and middle. Becomes quite fruity with more blueberry than blackberry flavors. Lightly astringent tartness is present later on. Finishes with wine-like aftertaste. Very good.
