Commercial Description:
Black & Blue is golden Belgian Ale made with over 300 lbs of fresh blackberries and blueberries. With a deep purple full body and a long-lasting lacy pink head, this ale is both attractive and delicious! It is tart and fruity, like our brewers! The subtle bitterness of Hallertau and Saaz hops shines through the fruit forward flavor and sets the palate aglow. (30 IBUs). This tasty brew has smooth but noticeable alcohol warmth. Belgian yeast gives this brew a characteristically dry spicy finish. The beautiful interplay of fruit, spice, and alcohol is complimented by a soft malt profile, and a high level of carbonation.

Reddish purple color, pinkish head. Nose of mild berries, malt. Almost medium bodied, slight tart/sweet flavor, mild fruitness and spicy bitterness, decent interplay of elements. Very understated in most aspects, hard to believe its 10% but I did feel it. Was fairly enjoyable. Maybe a nice one to start the ladies with:) But all in all, for $12 a pop, I expect more.

750 ml bottle from Wine Specialist (12.99). Ruby orange color with a smallish white head. Aromas of dark berries and bready malt. Medium body with creamy carbonation. Flavor is slightly sour, dark berries, caramel, and a light touch of grassy hop. Finish is neither sweet nor sour. The long result is more blackberry than anything else. Upon reflection it seems to have a candi aspect. A berry tripel?

750 bottle. Many thanks to Hopscotch for sending this beer my way. Pours dark reddish amber with lots of carbonation and a tight beige head. The aroma has raspberries, but mainly blueberries for the fruit aspect. There is also caramel malt, light spice, light cream and some alcohol. Medium / thick body with a good amount of semi-sharp carbonation. The flavor starts with strong berries, caramel malt with some warmth. It is thick and lightly cloying. The finish has more warmth with some added spice. As it warms more fruits comes out and the alcohol subsides. A good beer, but not too exciting.

GABF 2006: Purplish type color. Very fruity berry aroma. Both sweet and tart. Flavor matched. I seemed to get a little chocolate note in it. I liked the red and white better.

Bottle... Clear copper ale with a mid-sized, creamy, pinkish head. Good retention. The aroma is of berries and leathery, earthy hops. Sweet, crystal and pale malt flavor with bunches of sweet berries and a sassy hop bitterness (the only thing keeping this brew from becoming totally cloying and annoying)... nice, necessary touch. Medium-bodied with a lightly abrasive mouthfeel and mild carbonation. Watery, then dry finish. 10% ABV?? Could’ve fooled this guy... bonus points!

Bottled. Orange and reddish coloured. Quite clear. Off white head. Sweetish and fruity aroma with some notes of berries. Flavour has alcohol and berries and the sweetness is countered nicely by a vague sourness. Is medium bodied. Sweetish end.

This is the second bottle of this beer I have had, and I was not that impressed with it. The beer seemed too sour and tart for my liking. It pours very nice and clean: clear copper color, very attractive, and not but a thin trace of head on it. Aroma is a bit of grass and sugary syrup. It doesn’t really tell much from the beer by the aroma. The flavor doesn’t come off as bitter and sour as before. It’s much more refreshing. I let this sit out to warm up a bit and it lets the flavors come out more. There is some (surprisingly) mild fruitiness, yeasty flavors and a tad bit of tart. This really helps once it warms up. More of the bitter berry flavor comes out as this goes on. Quite a tasty treat, but not as good as the red and white.

Poured a murky red color with a thin, off red color that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of blackberries, some buttercream, berry skins, cherry, and light alcohol. Taste of sweet berry, light tartness from berry skins, a sweet caramel, maybe vanilla, and faint alcohol in the finish.
