Commercial Description:
Black & Blue is golden Belgian Ale made with over 300 lbs of fresh blackberries and blueberries. With a deep purple full body and a long-lasting lacy pink head, this ale is both attractive and delicious! It is tart and fruity, like our brewers! The subtle bitterness of Hallertau and Saaz hops shines through the fruit forward flavor and sets the palate aglow. (30 IBUs). This tasty brew has smooth but noticeable alcohol warmth. Belgian yeast gives this brew a characteristically dry spicy finish. The beautiful interplay of fruit, spice, and alcohol is complimented by a soft malt profile, and a high level of carbonation.

Bottle Alaskanwarren picked up while we were out beer shopping around Denver. Thanks Brian! Peachy tan pour, rough beige head. Blue Koolaid® and cotton candy aroma. A high frequency minty sort of nose. Cranberry/lemon tart flavor, a bit of clean alcohol. Pleasant bright fruity flavor, excessively sweet nose.

Bottle. Pours a clear amber color with an off-white head. Sweet malty and fruity blueberry aroma. Sweet malty fruity flavor with some hints of blueberry. Long fruity finish with some sour hints and a bitter aftertaste.

750ml bottle, dated 2/12/07. pours a beautiful clear deep red with small white head around the rim. nose is surprisingly more yeasty than fruity. that yeast smell is pretty offensive, like something rotten. other aroma notes are cinnamon, blueberries, and belgian candy sugar. flavor is more spicy than fruity, hints of coriander, cinnamon, and something i can’t put my finger on. subtle blackberry notes as well. this beer also isn’t very tart. finishes dry with subtle tart fruit notes. about the only thing it has going for it is appearance and well hidden alcohol. now that i drink more of it and pair with cheddar and crackers, and mushroom turnovers this becomes more enjoyable.

Pours a clear ruby red brown brew with a thick pinkish white head. Fast dissolving head and leaves a sparce lacing. Aroma is sweet berries, roasted malt, and a touch of pepper. Taste is highly carbonated, very tart berries, more spice and hints of coriander & cinnamon. Finish is medium body, a little dry and a tart aftertaste. not bad, liked the red and white better... but very drinkable

25 oz bottle. Pours a clear orangish body with a pink-ruby tinge under a small fizzy white head that faded to a partial covering. Huge fruity berries dominate the nose, the blueberry being stronger than the raspberry but both are distinguishable. A touch of alcohol, some yeast, and a little huskiness. Favor is big fresh juicy berries, mostly sweet, but with a slight raspberry tartness on the finish. Heavy caramel malt adds to the general sweet theme. Mouthfeel is fairly full bodied with all the risidual sweetness, just shy of being cloying. Fizzy but soft carbonation. Overall, this was an OK offering, but nothing that I pay for again.

750ml bottle. Ruby hued with a moldy white head. Bright fruit aromas. Blueberry and chery. Raisins with a touch of spice. Toasty brownie malt aromas. Full bodied with a high gravity. Bready malts and big fruity notes. Sugary with a mild alcohol burn. Moderate effervescence. Brownie and fruit notes. Mixed berries, raspberries blueberries and cranberries. An almost grapey flavor. Tart and sour. sugar and yeasty. Vinuous yet malty. This was a fun beer.

This beer tasted a lot like what I think Forte would taste like if you aged it for about two years. It is a mellow fruitiness that I found inoffensive, somewhat appealing, but not awefully exciting either. Not bad; and I’d recommend it. This beer is reddish with a soapy head. It has a fruity sour cherry smell. Flavor is mellow sour cherries and this beer is not boozy or unpleasantly fruity (which was my impression of Forte). Mouthfeel is a bit watery. I thought this beer was decent, but it may have been just a bit too mellow. A mix of half this and half Forte I think would be perfect!

Bottle. Pours a clear amber with a one finger somewhat pinkish white head that leaves good lacing. Aroma of berries and light citrus. Taste is the same as aroma. Medium mouthfeeel with a mild amount of bitterness, well hidden alcohol, and tart finish. Very good.
