3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours pretty if cloudy copper-amber with medium, chunky off-white head that quickly reduces to minor skim. A very nice looking beer!
Big berry nose comes through even before the head dissipates. But while the palate retains some berry sweetness, an assertive citrus hop element adds lemon sourness as opposed to tartness.
There’s a nice fizziness from carbonation, but a hot undercurrent from the 10 percent ABV. That turns out to be a bit much for a hot summer’s day. This might be more enjoyable for spring or fall.
Black and Blue is also a beer whose palate becomes a bit gentler if it is not straight from the cooler or refrigerator. The color also becomes clearer as carbonation and yeast settle.
This is another instance where Dogfish Head has made an enjoyable beer, but its hops-sessive approach and pursuit of relatively high alcohol content trips it up short of its full potential.
