COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black & Blue is golden Belgian Ale made with over 300 lbs of fresh blackberries and blueberries. With a deep purple full body and a long-lasting lacy pink head, this ale is both attractive and delicious! It is tart and fruity, like our brewers! The subtle bitterness of Hallertau and Saaz hops shines through the fruit forward flavor and sets the palate aglow. (30 IBUs). This tasty brew has smooth but noticeable alcohol warmth. Belgian yeast gives this brew a characteristically dry spicy finish. The beautiful interplay of fruit, spice, and alcohol is complimented by a soft malt profile, and a high level of carbonation.

750 ml bottle @ home. Color is amber with a red hue. Head is as good as non-existant. Aroma’s: sweet fruit (raspberry is evident), some hoppiness too. Retronasal there’s also some alcoholic sweetness. Flavor is medium sweet with hints of fruity tartness and a little bitterness. Rather strong alcohol feel (warms the throat). Medium bodied. Finishes somewhat dry, but the flavor is quickly gone. Worth a try.

Pours pretty if cloudy copper-amber with medium, chunky off-white head that quickly reduces to minor skim. A very nice looking beer! Big berry nose comes through even before the head dissipates. But while the palate retains some berry sweetness, an assertive citrus hop element adds lemon sourness as opposed to tartness. There’s a nice fizziness from carbonation, but a hot undercurrent from the 10 percent ABV. That turns out to be a bit much for a hot summer’s day. This might be more enjoyable for spring or fall. Black and Blue is also a beer whose palate becomes a bit gentler if it is not straight from the cooler or refrigerator. The color also becomes clearer as carbonation and yeast settle. This is another instance where Dogfish Head has made an enjoyable beer, but its hops-sessive approach and pursuit of relatively high alcohol content trips it up short of its full potential.

Bottle from Berts. Definite fruitiness, fruit juice sweetness, definite berry presence. Sweet nose and taste, smooth finish for a high abv fruit beer.

750 ml bottle. Rose colored liquid topped by a moderate rocky pinkish head. Tart berry nose with a hint of citrus hops. Intense berry flavor upfront with yeasty notes. Warming alcohol burn is oh so subtle. Slightly bready maltiness. Subtle citrus hop innuendo. Fruity dry finish. Belgian fruit beer character with a hoppy jolt.
