COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black & Red is a velvety smooth dry-minted stout with a serious fruit problem! The huge portion of heavily roasted grains brings a dry, chocolaty character which contrasts its sweet fruity full body. As you tilt your glass, youll notice that the black color you are perceiving is actually a very deep reddish hue and the rich creamy foam has a tinge of pink to it. Black & Red starts off roasted and warming with a robust mintiness from 100lbs of organic mint (from our friends at Washington’s Green Grocer) added to the secondary fermentation and finishes out sweet and smooth.

Draught @ Headkeeper: This one was served in a snifter. It poured a vary dark brown, that has a slight ruby tinge to it. Small dark tan head that didn’t linger, but left a little lace. Nice nose to this one. Malts, raspberry , mint, hints of roastiness. I thought the taste was excellent. Roasted malt, raspberry, mint, faint chocolate. Some others hiding in there also. Some sweetness, but not overly so. Fairly full bodied. Different, but well done.

Draft. Poured reddish black color with an average frothy brown head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Solid mint, dark fruit and chocolate aroma. Medium to full body with a sticky texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy mint, dark fruit and chocolate flavor with a medium mint sweet finish of moderate to long duration. My expectations where exceeded.

Review from May 2011. Poured at the brewpub. This one was pitch black and poured very little head. Once again I was amazed how one ingredient can just wow a beer. This time around it was the mint. It dominated the aroma. Mixed in there was small amount of roasted malt and a small sourness which I guess is from the raspberries I hear are in this beer. The mint just took over here so it’s hard to say. In the taste the mint is very up front but there is some nice chocolate notes that hit mid palette and slight fruitness on the aftertaste. A ton of sweetness. It’s like a frigging mint chococolate cookie. This is a total sipper and dessert beer.

UPDATED: JAN 12, 2012 Malt and strong licourish aroma. Black color with a small brown head. Sweet beginning with a light sweet roasted beginning. Very robust.

Aroma is cherry and a little bit of strawberry. There are a lot of cherries, a little bit of mint and a little bit of mango in the taste. The fruit taste is anything but subtle. Not an everyday beer, but worth trying. Note: There always seems to be complaints about fruit beers like this one, but I do think this one was well executed, whether you like it or not. I think it’s generally better to order a fruit beer and get one that actually tastes like fruit, than to have one totally lacking in flavor.

Awful unless you are into minty cough syrup. We chose this in a flight. The waiter wouldn’t bring in the flight until we tasted a sample!! Not sure where this one would be classified. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft from Coalhouse Pizza, Stamford, CT. Pours a beautiful thick black body with a dark brown head that laces throughout the pint. This stout has a strong mint flavor that provides notes of black licorice and cherry. Overall, the flavor provides a strong menthol taste that masks the natural flavors of a stout. I am not a fan of this one.

Deep beautiful color, but it all falls apart when you put your nose to the glass. Mint-cherry cough syrup with high residual sweetness and prominent booziness. Almost a drain-pour.

Tap @ Capones. Ruby dark brown with biege head. Mint and alcohol, candy cane and cough syrup. Medium body and average carbonation, sweet, anise, smooth, alcohol. Odd.

Draft at Capones in Norristown, PA. Pours a deep dark brown that’s pretty much black and completely opaque with mahogany edges and a half finger light beige head that slowly settles into a lasting ring. Minimal spots of lace left behind.  Sweet, spicy aroma with a decent balance of sweet and roasted malt, floral hops and a strong herbal presence. Subtle licorice along with some chocolate, pepper and pine needle.  Very strange. Medium bodied but on the thinner end with a balance of earthy, herbal spice, sweet malt and vinous fruit. Lots of pepper and strong mint countered by sweet chocolate, boozy sweetness and dak fruit especially cherry, plum and grape. Really odd combination of flavors.  I didn’t like this beer butni really didn’t dislike it either. The flavor profile was so strange that I kept going back for more. Before I knew it the glass was empty.
