COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The elusive brew is made from pilsner malt and amber malt with an original gravity of 26.5?P, yielding an 11% abv. It's hopped with Warrior and Glacier varieties. Primary fermentation takes place in open vessels using two yeast strains, one American and one English. For added complexity, the beer is conditioned on barrel staves of French Oak for four months before being dry hopped with Glacier at the rate of a half-pound per barrel. This elixir is then blended 50/50 with 90 Minute IPA. After blending, the beer will measure 80 IBU and 10% abv. Bottled in corked bottles through Michael Jackson’s rare beer club by late November 04 and available in 12 ounce full distribution in early January 05.

Bottle from Bieres Sans Frontieres, GBBF, drank deliberately un-fresh (6 months since bottling). Clear copper, lovely pouffey white head that slowly subsides leaving ring, patches and some lacing. Nose of some citrusy hop notes, toffee, caramel (I have a cold so can’t get more, frustratingly). Tastes sweet cinder toffee and rich caramel malt, moderate bitterness, citrus and resinous hop character, plenty of rich buttery vanilla oak coming though too. Fairly full body, smooth creamy mouthfeel, moderate carbonation, bitter finish. Wasn’t sure exactly what to expect from this one, but on drinking it the whole idea completely made sense. I don’t want to buy into the hype machine (nor the backlash either I guess) but every DFH beer I’ve had has been excellent, at least.

12oz bottle. Cloudy burnt orange and sticky lacing. Aroma of caramel, sticky melon and ripe peach juice, and wet wood notes. Taste is excellent juicy sweetness balanced by hop bitterness. Creamy and cookie-like mouthfeel, with a bright-feeling dry finish.

Bottle. Pours reddish gold with a fluffy white head. Aromas of butterscotch, black grapes and hearty hops. Flavors are sweet malt--butterscotch, pine, ripe peach, bittersweet citrus, pineapple and bready tones. Finishes with a pleasing hoppy bite that balances beautifully. Slightly sticky mouthfeel. This is a beautiful beer. Big, but not cloyingly sweet or overpoweringly hoppy. Malty, but nicely balanced with the right amount of hops. Wow.

Bottle: Poured coppery orange with off white head. Mild fruity hop aroma with nice malt undertones. A very nice balance between malt and hops and a light oak note comes through in the palate. For an imperial ipa this was really smooth!

A really excellent brew from dogfish head. Orange/Amber pour with a creamy lasting head. Great balance, as always from dogfish. Molasses and floral hops on the nose. Creamy, boozy body. I think this beer is underrated. Definitely cellar this one for at least few months.

Pours two fingers of head on a clear straw body. The aroma mild alcohol, old grain and wood. Not bad, just not much there. The taste has excellent balance. A tame mixture of sweet and bitter in the beginning that turns to wood mellowness, and finishes with a slight uptick of bitter. The texture is smooth with low carbonation. An outstanding ale. I wish it had a bit more on the aroma side though.

Poured a cloudy amber colour with a thing white head that left thick lacing. Aroma is sweet floral malt and hop notes with an encompassing woody base. Flavor is sweet caramel and toffee malts, piney and citrus hops, and notes of oak with a small bite of alcohol with toasted vanilla. Medium bodied and not too bitter with a warm finish. Fun for those who love their alcohol.
