Cavie (1318), Fort Worth, Texas, USA Apr 26, 2009 Ruby pour. Sour aroma mixed with aged hops. Tastes of old wood. Small sweet notes but also hints at must. It took me and my friends a long time to put these flavors into words, but we decided on soured fruit. Almost a red wine past it’s prime. As far as the style, it’s not up to par. Hopslam blows this out of the water. Standing alone it’s decent but I wouldn’t get it again. LiebeBier (788), Annapolis, Maryland, USA Apr 26, 2009 12 oz Bottle - One of the better DFh beers I have had. They really let the malt and hops flavors shine without overwhelming the beer with the yeast. Alcohol well hidden. Enjoyable. OSLO (825), Perth, Australia Apr 25, 2009 [12 oz Bottle] Pours red with a small, lingering off-white head. Aroma is very hoppy and outstanding. Lots of pine and tangerine; not really any oak, but I do get a touch of vanilla that could be coming from that. Lots of 90 minute influence. Taste is a just a slight let-down. Good deal of sweetness up front, but hops are definitely there with more citrus (orange and lemon), alcohol, and then malt. Surprisingly restrained bitterness. Good mouthfeel, smooth, decent finish that is malt-dominant. At first I was a little disappointed by this beer....but I don’t know, it kind of grew on me. The flavor still could not live up to the aroma, and the oak influence was less than expected, but it was good nonetheless. djd07 (724), Houston, Texas, USA Apr 25, 2009 12 oz. bottle. Pours a clear copper amber with a paperthin off white head. The aroma is a piney hops with citrus and floral. Decent spotty lacing along the glass. Medium mouthfeel with roasted malt upfront with the hops coming out in the bitter finish. Hides the alcohol well, a very good double IPA from Dogfish Head. livelaughlovep (96), Lakewood, Ohio, USA Apr 24, 2009 Aroma:Sweet. Citrus peel, resin.
Appearance: Burnt orange, with a gloriously fluffy white head.
Flavor:Citrus, resin, a good dose of pine. Caramel malts keep it smooth. Medium bite to it. .
Palate: Smooth, biting, dry finish.
Overall Impression:
The blended old and new is just a glorious thing. The older, oak aged brings the maltiness, the dry finish, and the fresh brings a balanced hoppy powerhouse with just the right finish. Simply amazing. thejon375 (390), Tampa, Florida, USA Apr 24, 2009 Again not a huge fan of IPAs, but this one is good. Big malty beginning with a hoppy finish. Good caramel flavor with the bite of hops. If you can get it try it. DrDavid (957), Johnson, Vermont, USA Apr 22, 2009 Bottle. Aroma is herbal and somewhat caramel sweet. Reddish-orange body, small head. Flavor is strange. Sweet grapefruit, followed by orange, and then a subtle bittersweet finish. Overall, the oak does come through as well, and I’m just not sure that this is what I want in an IIPA. angrypirate06 (680), Texas, USA Apr 21, 2009 12 oz bottle. Clear golden brown pour with a hazy off white head. Aroma of floral hops, exotic fruit, caramel. A very delicious smelling beer! Flavor was pretzels, malts, and a hoppy finish.
