JaBier (1130), Capital City, Ohio, USA Feb 17, 2009 12oz bottle shared by Dogbrick. I forgot to ask if it was one I gave him a year ago because I bought a quad and hated it. All beers are deserving of a second chance, especially as the palate evolves. Pours cloudy amber with a big off-white head. Malty and sugary aroma with some hop and alcohol. Bourbon, vanilla and caramel malt up front with a hop finish. Not outstanding, but I definitely like it better this time than last. ditmier (1021), Boise, Idaho, USA Feb 12, 2009 Bottle from Jan 2007 - Pours a straw orange with a small white head...aroma is heavy barrel tartness, malt...flavour is way diferent, first sip is blindingly sweet, but as it warms and opens, it evolves into a malty, burnt sugar, dry fruity brew...the alcohol is not burning my throat, but is keeping me from rollerskating a straight line tonight...I don’t figure how this is classified X2IPA with any rationality, but whatever...great dessert beer... BeerBunker (607), Burbank, Illinois, USA Feb 5, 2009 12oz bottle. Pours a murky amber color with an of-white head. Heavy carbonation. Aroma is of hops, caramel, oak, malt, citrus, and alcohol. Taste is of hops, citrus, wood, caramel malt, oak, and alcohol. Surprisingly the booze isn’t overly present like in most DFH brews. Even with all the oak and wood flavors, the hop flavors still come through. Although not overly strong, the alcohol warms immensely. Lingering citrus taste. Almost creamy and sticky mouthfeel. Very dry, wooden finish. Definitely more drinkable than expected. Awesome. jmm635 (249), Havertown, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 3, 2009 Updated: Apr 13, 2009Pours a gorgeous, hazy, red-orange color with a smooth white head. Well balanced aroma of very sweet malts and hops with a bit of raspberry. The hops don’t overwhelm the flavor, which has a nice bit of fruitiness but still resembles a DIPA perfectly. I found this brew very smooth, drinkable, and with a long lasting flavor. Simply fantastic for any DIPA fan! elihapa (1033), Honolulu, California, USA Feb 3, 2009 Bottle, $3.45. Pours orange brown with a hazy body and wispy head. Aroma of apricot, malt, vanilla, and booze. Palate is luxuriously rich, with slight alcohol warmth and dryness. Initial flavor has unexpected milk chocolate and wood chips. This rounds in the middle with esters and booze. Finish is boozy, slightly spicy, dry, and woody. Hmmm, not sure where this one fits in. It is a solid blend, but I really feel that IPAs – even imperial ones like this – need crispness in palate and bright hoppiness in flavor. Unfortunately, this beer falls short in both categories. ewestern (198), Ohio, USA Jan 20, 2009 Pour a cloudy orange-amber color with a thing white head. Nice and bubbly. Aroma was a little weak but had sweet hops with a slight hint of honey and orange peel. The flavor followed the orange peel and hops with spices and some floral notes poking through. Slight alcohol flavor in the finish. Palate was pretty incredible for me. Smooth throughout, with a slight bitterness and kick of spices at the very end. Tingled the tongue and then left. Palate was easily my favorite part of the beer. 502Flavors (617), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Jan 15, 2009 Sampled tonight at Rich O’s. Hazy orange color with a nice offwhite head. It could have been a bit hoppier, but was nice in that it was truly balanced in the nose and flavor. I hate when IIPAs turn into malt bombs and lose the IPAness. Medium to heavy body with medium to minimum carbonation. TaktikMTL (2745), Montréal-Nord, Quebec, Canada Jan 5, 2009 Bouteille de 12 oz achetée chez Finger Lakes Beverage Center (Ithaca, NY).
