danielcurtis81 (879), San Diego, California, USA Oct 19, 2008 Updated: Feb 13, 2009Bottle (sometime in ’08?, from notes and memory. ). Amber color. Lots of good flavors here. Good oak and malt flavors on the entry. Various hops come then come in to the equation and leads to a dry slightly alcoholic finish. All the malts almost make it taste like a brown ale. I really liked this one!
Re sampled (2/13/09) after aging around a year or so. Pours a nice cider orange brown. with a little white head. Nose is sweet with oak. A little more subdued then fresh. Oak is predominate in the flavors. has a bit of a wine taste to it. Some souring fruit flavors to it as well. Sweet cane sugar and brown sugar flavors. Papaya and a light pineapple flavor comes in a little later. The pop of the hops is completely gone with a minor amount of resin flavors. Mouth is full, light bitter, strong dry and a strong alcohol presences. I enjoyed this beer a lot more early on but still a decent drink with new characteristics even past its maturation. j12601 (1149), Poughkeepsie, New York, USA Oct 18, 2008 Bottle. Pours a hazy orange-brown with a thick white head, that deflates steadily. Aroma is heavy with hops, but beyond that lies bread and vanilla. Remarkably smooth with light effervescent bubbles. Tastes malty and of light ripe fruits, possibly pineapple. Finish is more hops and a healthy dose of wood.
rds (224), USA Oct 16, 2008 Updated: Jul 12, 2009Misty amber ale, with a thin antique white head, very malty to the nose with a hint of vanilla bean, surprisingly warm flavor, like brandy, with some hops shining through the complex malt that is the central theme. fiulijn (7150), Como; Lausanne (CH); Malmö (SWE), Italy Oct 16, 2008 Courtesy of friend Matteo Cloudy amber color, very thin head. Powerful aroma, malty, with a hint of sweet vanilla. Full bodied, with a strong and very sweet malt flavor, as I like, some caramel and toffee too, lightly fruity. The bitterness is not as powerful as expected, maybe softenend by the oak-ageing; in the final and with the time passing by, the caramel rises. An excellent Barley Wine. I like this kind of beer, but maybe missing some character. KnutAlbert (3101), Oslo, Norway Oct 16, 2008 Bottle from New Beer Distributors, NYC.
Mahogny beer. Vanilla barrel, alcohol warming, rather sweet. I’d say the barrel has made this into more of a barley wine. Vinous, black cherry, I assume it would be sticky without the massive hopping. I’d recomment to tweak the blend until it is drier. CaptBier (301), Birmingham, Alabama, USA Oct 9, 2008 Bottle. A hazy orange beer with a dense orange head. The aroma is sweet fruity on an alcoholic backdrop. The flavor is fruity with mango and passion fruit being most dominant, leading to an end, that mixes in some wood notes.
yankeefan21 (82), USA Oct 3, 2008 Bottle: Poured a reddish-tan with a finger tall head. Sweet smells of caramel and oak dominate the nose. If they ever make "man candles" I want mine to smell like this. First taste has a strong presence of alcohol with some of the caramel malt showing through. Oak is very present in the finish. This is a good beer but I agree with some of the others that this is more like a barley wine than an IPA as it doesn’t have that distinctive IPA hoppiness to it. Anyway - good beer. Gets a little hard to finish, but I’d get it again.. bennylava (83), California, USA Oct 3, 2008 12 oz bottle. I tried this on a couple of occasions and this has been the most disappointing of all Dogfish Head beers. Pours an amber color with a thin head. In both cases, the beer seemed to go flat before I was finished drinking. For the taste, I think the oak, alcohol and malt flavor overwhelmed all others. I would call this a strong ale more than an IPA because it didn’t have much hop flavor, aroma, or bitterness. I’ll take the 60/90/120 min IPA’s any day over this one.
