greenleaf (90), Florida, USA Sep 1, 2008 bottle 12oz. pouts a deep copper with a small off white head. nose is berry and citrus. a tasty double IPA satan165 (541), River Grove, Illinois, USA Aug 28, 2008 Updated: Aug 29, 2008nose is of extreme oak and alcohol, it even smells syrupy. the flavor rings true to that characteristic and after a sip the nose intensifies. intense warmth off this one, the oaked character seems to have brought the alcohol to the forefront. somehow, its not intolerable at all though. nice dark color typical for the style, fruit (even dark/dried) is at a minimum, wood and booze at a maximum along with hops of course in full force. the sharp bitterness youd expect doesnt come through like a boring old american over hopped IIPA. this has alot of character and intregue, this is my 2nd sample and this one is aged close to 2 years, a wonderous brew that enjoys warmth and provides it as well. darn1207 (528), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Aug 24, 2008 12oz bottle from new beer distributors in manhattan. hazy orange pour with thin off-white head that disappears quickly. aroma is doughy, peach, honey, spices and caramel. whoa - taste not what I was expecting... sticky sweat caramel candy and bourbon (maybe). not much bitter presence at all. nice warmth. definitely complex and more going on than I’ve described here. just doesn’t appeal to my tastes. it does pair well with chocolate and peanut butter oatmeal cookies... if that exact same scenario happens to come up for anybody else. K-7 daknole (2802), Plantation, Florida, USA Aug 17, 2008 12 oz bottle...amber pour, small head. aroma of strong malt, cider, maple syrup and some hops. Flavor is malty, booozy, honey and some nice hops. I taste the wood and is less hoppy that I would have expected. very nice. Imaena (259), Portland, Maine, USA Aug 17, 2008 12 0z. Bottle 08’. Pours amber with a thick biege head. Sweet fruits and oak in the nose. Alcohol warmth and malt sweetness up front. Deep finish with great wood and fruit. Briliant. tomthompson89 (1456), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 14, 2008 nice dark amber color good sized frothy white head. nose is oak, orange citrus and caremel malts. Flavor is similar, kinda sweet but very drinkable, has a good alcohol burn and a good wood finish Woodsman52 (23), , Ohio, USA Aug 12, 2008 Pours a milky amber color. Nice lacy ring around the now diminished head. There is a very small amount of sedement floating around in this one. The aroma is extremely subtle. Tastes of oak with a dry finish. There is a bit of a fruity aftertaste, very nice. i will drink this one again. sstackho (249), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 9, 2008 12oz single bottle purchased for around $4.50 from Charles St Liquors in Boston. Brewed on date appears to be in February 2008, consumed at the end of May 2008 after being jealous that I didn’t attend the DFH dinner at beerbistro in Toronto two nights before. Pours a cloudy, medium gold with a bit of head and just a bit of gentle carbonation. Aroma isn’t too strong, and reminds me of some sherry-like barleywines - not my favourite thing, so I’m concerned. Ends up there’s nothing to be concerned about. First sip is nice - very full and rich. The flavour is complex, like a Belgian. Hops are not dominant, but provide a nice bitterness as the beer goes down the throat a bit hot. Oak is noticeable. Full bodied. A nice sipper.
