Commercial Description:
The elusive brew is made from pilsner malt and amber malt with an original gravity of 26.5?P, yielding an 11% abv. It's hopped with Warrior and Glacier varieties. Primary fermentation takes place in open vessels using two yeast strains, one American and one English. For added complexity, the beer is conditioned on barrel staves of French Oak for four months before being dry hopped with Glacier at the rate of a half-pound per barrel. This elixir is then blended 50/50 with 90 Minute IPA. After blending, the beer will measure 80 IBU and 10% abv. Bottled in corked bottles through Michael Jackson’s rare beer club by late November 04 and available in 12 ounce full distribution in early January 05.

Pours a very dark amber, let’s just call it a brown. Very nice two inches of off white head. This is different. On the first taste, you get lots of malt, and a good amount of alcohol. There is a slight bit of fruit coming through as well. A good amount of hops in the taste. Just not the citrusy, juicy type. These are piney and grassy. Very malty and very big mouthfeel. I think superfresh and from the tap this would be better. Different, can’t say that I’ve had anything like it. Which is why I love Dogfish Head.

From bottle : Pours a hazy apricot color with a finger of offwhite foamy head. Sticky lacing. Strong hop smell, woody. Taste is really nice. Some fruity hops and wood flavors, nice and smooth and leaves a pleasent flavor afterwords. I dont really taste much of the 10% abv, which is nice. Really nice IIPA.

Bottle. Hazy dark orange with a off white head. The aroma is intense, but a little too much alcohol present. There’s lots of sweet fruit and oak in there as well though. Flavor is very sweet for an IPA, with fruit and woody flavors coming through. Also has quite a bit of caramel. Alcohol is present throughout, but not overly so. Has a somewhat bitter finish, but still falls in the shadow of the sweet malty oak flavors the dominate the beer. Medium to full bodied. Maybe more of an American Strong Ale? Still, a complex IPA that offers something different and thus intrigues me.

12oz bottle: pours amber brown with minimal head, aroma is strong in hops with hints of malt, flavor starts off like a hoppy IPA with a good malt backing it but after a few sips the oak comes through more and more. doesnt taste much like the 90min IPA but still pretty good.

The aroma is hoppy with hints of malt. The head is huge, off-white and creamy with good lacing. The body is a cloudy copper. The initial flavor is a creamy hoppy taste on the back of the tongue with hints of a roasted caramel/molasses, very refreshing. The finish is good and long. The body is medium, the texture creamy and the carbonation soft. This bottle is from February 2008. Just opened a second bottle dated 1/08/07. The head is still huge but is diminishing faster with good lacing. The body is a clear copper. The aroma is malts, a touch of hoppiness. The head is lighter, more white. The flavor hits big and then a sourness, hits the roof of the mouth and more on the front of the tongue. Sweetness, caramel/molasses dominate the finish. Probably shouldn’t be aged more than a year. Still drinkable and not too bad.

Bottle. Rich amber body, medium white head, fruity nose. Fruity flavor, without the ridiculous level of bitterness that any double IPAs carry. Dangerously drinkable.

A Mes rate: bottle from American Beer Distributors.
Clear amber brown with a thin white foamy head. Liquorice and dark fruit aroma with a bit of barley, decent malt and hops but spoiled a little by a strong flowery perfume note. The flavour is thankfully devoid of the perfume and is actually really good. Lovely balance of malt and hops. Big and resinous, nice sugary alcohol, good bready malt and a big finish with everything all wrapped up together at once. Lingering hop bitterness kicks ass. Good stuff that could be better without the flowers.

12oz bottle. Aroma was of molasses, dark fruits, alcohol, steeping barley, and a hint of pineapple. Poured a clear dark orange color. The head was off white and reduced over a minute or two to a thin film. Full bodied and very sweet with carbonation on the lower end of the spectrum. The flavor profile is malt and fruit dominated with the likes of molasses, toffee, caramel, and pineapple. There was also a fair amount of vanilla, light citrusy hops, and a hint of wood. I didn’t get much in the way of hop bitterness and at 10%, there was no alcohol astringency. Pretty good, but not the easiest thing to drink due to all the sugar.
