Commercial Description:
The elusive brew is made from pilsner malt and amber malt with an original gravity of 26.5?P, yielding an 11% abv. It's hopped with Warrior and Glacier varieties. Primary fermentation takes place in open vessels using two yeast strains, one American and one English. For added complexity, the beer is conditioned on barrel staves of French Oak for four months before being dry hopped with Glacier at the rate of a half-pound per barrel. This elixir is then blended 50/50 with 90 Minute IPA. After blending, the beer will measure 80 IBU and 10% abv. Bottled in corked bottles through Michael Jackson’s rare beer club by late November 04 and available in 12 ounce full distribution in early January 05.

Poured a hazy dark amber with a thin pillowy off white head. Aroma is sharp malt, plum, cherry, and a bit of hops. Flavor has quite a bit of oak and vanilla up front, with some sweet dark fruit, green apples, sweet malts, and a bit of hops. Finishes slightly sweet, nice mouthfeel.

Hazy light amber, average off white head and lace. Sweet malt aroma, wood, hops. Nice body, pleasantly sweet, fruity esters, alcohol and bitter end counter sweetness but its a rough finish, alcohol seems to clash with the bitterness and I dont think I like the flavor of the hops used. Does not do it for me.

Pours a lovely deep ruby hue with tight but persistent white cap and spotty lacing. Orange liqueur sweetness on the nose, with a fair bit of herbal aroma balanced by a slight wooden character. Bright yet smooth on the palate, with orange zest and golden malts leading to a healthily bitter, resiny finish with a warming touch of alcohol. A pleasant beer probably worthy of aging a year or two.

12 oz. bottle. Muddy orange color. Medium sized off-white head. Big, sweet, citrus hop aroma. Malty body with a nice bit of sweetness. Vanilla notes, oak, dark fruits. Subtle hop flavors lurking in the background. Nice and smooth body with a hint of warming alcohol.

Bottle bonused courtesy on fiver29. Pours a clear dark amber color with an initial one finger head that fades fast with zero lacing. Nose is sweet malt, caramel and alcohol. Palate is sweet malt, some oak, maybe a touch of vanilla. Not much hop for the style. Alcohol is hot on this one – has the burn the back of your throat aspect. Too unbalanced for my taste.

Dogfish Head Burton Baton is a hazy amber ale with a medium, off-white head. The aroma is sweet with some note of alcohol and the flavor is sugary with some apples. This is very complex and the mixture with the 90 minute IPA make this very nicely balanced.

Served cold from 12 oz. bottle. After learning about the (seemingly) complicated brewing process, I was extremely anxious to drink this beer. Dark amber in color, with a quickly dissipating white head. Rich aroma filled with hops and a hint of the oak barrels. Taste is quite good, hoppy and warm. Smooth for an IPA, not as bitter as others. Preferable over the Rogue I2PA.

Wonderful beer. Oak aging adds richness and complexity of taste and aroma. Takes a bit of the edge of the extreme bitterness of some dogfish’s IPAs.
