RichJ7 (1175), Cullman, Alabama, USA Apr 8, 2008 Reddish amber pour with a small white head. Hoppy nose with a flavor that is very hoppy, but rather well balanced. Strangely tangy ... makes my jaw tingle a bit. Decent enough brew. Cybercat (778), Georgia, USA Apr 7, 2008 Aroma is not strong, but fairly hoppy with a surprising fruity overtone, like apricot or peach. Pours a rich dark brownish amber with a thick, fluffy head - darker than most IPAs I have tried. Flavor is rich and hoppy but not too bitter, with a pleasantly smoky hint. This ale dances on your tongue and leaves a hoppy, satisfying aftertaste. pintsize (1042), Austin, Texas, USA Apr 7, 2008 3-15-08 bottle shared with lb4lb thanks to DrJay
Very thick, dense cloudy red amber with a thick white bubbly head. Smell is doughy and malty and even has some banana in there as well. Flavor is very Dogfish Head. Unique, raisins, bananas, anise, and alcohol. Very difficult for me personally to even swallow. No hops are present in the smell or flavor. Just not drinkable or enjoyable for me. Flavor is too pungent and too DFH for me. RomanW70 (297), Providence, Rhode Island, USA Apr 7, 2008 Pours deep amber with a thin tan head. Big aroma of caramel, citrus and pine. Oak really comes out in the flavor with starts with a blast of sweeet malts and goes directly to a warming alcohol finish with some bitterness at the end. Alcohol is clearly present. The hops do NOT dominate here, and i would of appreciated a bit more flora and pine character. Still tasty. popdoggy (100), USA Apr 6, 2008 The aroma on this thing is great. Although I wouldnt really classify this as a Dipa, it is one hell of an ipa.
The english strong ale adds to the complexity and tones down the 90minute.
Very enjoyable. PhillyBeer2112 (2084), Orange Park, Florida, USA Apr 6, 2008 2005 bottle rated in Spring 2008, as many know a DIPA is not normally a candidate for aging, and wish only that I had a fresh one for comparison. However, while the hops had clearly faded, not any type of hop blast, there were still signs of their presence. Ringing the edges of this was a spicy, resiny and vaguely citric hop, perhaps with a touch of sweat, but it became difficult to separate that from the oak, because it was that, and not the malt that really has come to the fore. The aroma features a strong oakiness you sometimes smell in bourbon (but of course no bourbon notes in this). Flavor was mostly balanced, the malts are hard to describe, mostly just there as a base, spicy hops and strong oakiness leading into a warming, not quite hot, finish. Moderate bitterness is balance. Very cloudy bronze, with plenty of foamy head and full carbonation. Full palate. Still quite enjoyable in its own right, it perhaps a different animal than it once was. TikiE (360), Sylva, North Carolina, USA Apr 5, 2008 Wow! Intense and bitter! Smells sweet hoppy and taste of sweet hops until the brutal bitter finish, that last on the lips for a while. Absolutly delicious! emacgee (1859), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Apr 5, 2008 Pours a a nice ruby red with a one finger beige creamy head. The aroma is mellow, a bit subdued, sweet, fruity, citrusy, nice background hops, a very very light vanilla oak character. The flavor is mellow, sweet, earthy, spicy, nice citrusy hops, some grapefruit peel, alcohol is well hidden. Not a bad brew, the mixture of old and new makes for a seemingly more balanced DIPA.
